World War I changed the course of battle with the breakthrough of newly developed machines of war that not only altered the course of the war but how the future would be fought. The most revolutionary technological advancement that was developed during the war was the immensely armored and nearly indestructible tank. The tank became a significant factor which allowed various competitors to destroy each other at a rapid pace with its highly engineered skeletal structure and its ability to increase the armies mobility across the Western Front. The tank underwent continual improvement, and various models were developed such as, ‘Little Willie’ and ‘Big Willie’.
I joined because I wanted to understand the community that I would be taking part in for the entirety of my undergraduate degree. The community itself was within Central Valley, California, which was also known to be largely medically underserved and economically disadvantaged. I was able to witness this firsthand, as a college student focused on pursuing medicine, the impact of healthcare disparities, and social determinants of health. These experiences have instilled in me a commitment to serving and empowering marginalized communities. By actively engaging with other campus-based organizations and promoting health education initiatives, I aspire to contribute to RFU’s community outreach efforts and foster positive change in the communities
I am extremely honored to be recognized as a potential member of the National Honor Society (NHS). Being considered to become a member of the NHS means I have accomplished one of my academic and personal goals. After 10 years working as a registered nurse in many aspects of healthcare, felt an overwhelming desire to advance my career and myself to expand my role in caring for others. Becoming a nurse practitioner has always been a goal of mine. During my time working as a nursing manager, I became acutely aware of the need of skilled and talented providers that desire to provide passionate care to all individuals. I became especially concerned with the needs those with limited access to healthcare services. I am an accelerated student at Mailman School of Public Health and the reason I would like to attend this lecture series is to enhance my understanding of the problems that are facing many developing countries. Since I will only be at Columbia for 1 year I would like to maximize my education and broaden my horizons by attending these lectures and hopefully I can share my own experience and struggles as well. Health and social care is something that I have always been passionate about. Because I have studied health and social care for the last four years I have regularly met a lot of the most vulnerable members of society through past work experiences. Through past placements I have worked with children who have special needs. This helped me develop ways of communicating with the children this could be through sign language. Because my Aunt is deaf I have taught myself basic sign language in order to communicate with her effectively.
