A career as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner is a natural extension of my personal, educational, and research experiences. Although my path to nursing has not been a straight line, every experience that put me on this path has shaped my passion and dedication to psychiatric nursing. After losing loved ones to suicide at a young age, I made a promise to myself and to them that I would dedicate my life to helping individuals struggling with mental illness. This promise led me to study Psychology at UC Berkeley, where I fell in love with clinical research investigating the efficacy of treatments for mental illness.

I am an accelerated student at Mailman School of Public Health and the reason I would like to attend this lecture series is to enhance my understanding of the problems that are facing many developing countries. Since I will only be at Columbia for 1 year I would like to maximize my education and broaden my horizons by attending these lectures and hopefully I can share my own experience and struggles as well. Given my background as a recent medical school graduate and having lived both in Iran and Mexico I can bring my own experience of health system problems related to both countries and share some of these struggles with the group. My personal objective has always been working and serving the underserved population especially the Latino population

Through past placements I have worked with children who have special needs. This helped me develop ways of communicating with the children this could be through sign language. Because my Aunt is deaf I have taught myself basic sign language in order to communicate with her effectively.
I have always wanted to pursue a career related to the medical field, and it wasn't until my freshman year of college that I encountered the area of public health. I was immediately drawn to the specific area of epidemiology and infectious diseases. I am now a junior at the University of Texas majoring in Public Health with a concentration in microbiology and infectious diseases. I find epidemiology so enthralling, as it is implements ways in which we can scientifically and statistically describe diseases and the mortality/morbidity as well as predict how and why they spread.
