Public Universities Should Be Free For College Students

Throughout our childhood, we are taught to work hard, receive good grades and join extra curricular activities. By doing this, we are selling ourselves so we can gain experience of getting the career and universities we want. College is a place where we learn responsibility, independence, and academic growth. Even though we follow this pre-college process, some of us are restricted or held back from completing college. As a first generation college student, I got the chance to continue my education. Unfortunately, my college experience had ended shortly because I couldn’t afford the tuition. In life, there will always be obstacles, in my case it was money, that stand in the way of achieving goals.

Public universities should be free for students so that money will not be a burden. There are socioeconomic barriers that prevent students to pay full tuition. It affects students from wanting to broaden their education. Students that are accepted into college either put off their education, continue their education, but then drop out or become in debt. Colleges don’t take in consideration that students are intelligent enough to attend college, they only care about the amount of tuition students is capable to pay. Since public education is rated the highest expense by the non federal government. One method that can allow colleges to be free is by raising public taxes. If taxes were to pay for student tuitions, universities would need to be funded some type of way. Since students tuition is being paid by taxes, each college would have to find different sources of funding for programs. They would need to fund for dorms, books, transportation and many other expenses. Universities would have no way to pay for laboratory equipment and there would be a struggle to hire skilled
