Punishment In Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter

The scarlet letter for me is the most important symbol in this book. The scarlet letter in this book represents the punishment that was given to Hester Prynne for the crime that she committed. Hester committed a very serious crime; she had sexual relations with a man still being married. Hester was married to Roger Chillingworth but when this incident happened he was traveling and left her for a lot of time. Hester was sent to trial for a judge to decide how she was going to be punished after she committing the crime that she did. There was also something else special in this incident, after Hester had sexual relations with this anonymous person she also got pregnant and she had to suffer her punishment with the baby. After the trial ended her punishment was set, Hester had to stand in a platform with her baby and a big scarlet letter “A” wrapped around her neck. The “A” stand for adultery, which was the name of her crime. Hester was exposed to the whole town everybody knew the crime that she committed. Hester was very miserable, the things she had to go through with her punishment, people insulting her, calling her names, kids throwing things at her and other horrible things. …show more content…

Both of them had to pass through the pain of the scarlet letter ”A”, they both only had each other and they had to support themselves to move on. The scarlet letter in most of the book was carried by Hester, until the almost end of the book she had some problems with it and tried to take it off but, after Pearl being born and raised with it she believed the Scarlet Letter defines her
