During World War I, Canada fought numerous battles, made tough decisions, and impacted the way many Canadians live today. Have you ever wondered which battle had the most defining moments for Canadian History? The battle of Vimy Ridge marks the day that Canada became an independent nation. The significance wasn’t necessarily the battle itself, but the effect that Canada would feel nationally after. The Germans controlled Vimy Ridge since 1914, and three french attacks on the Ridge were all unsuccessful.
A social economist views the 1950s as the social classes being defined. The time boasted an image of successfulness during a time of peace and conformity. However, the 1950s do not deserve its reputation as a time of peaceful conformity. The harmonic image of the 1950s was an over-generalization that ignores the realities of what was going on in the country. The peaceful conformity was a false image that showed it’s true colors through gender/ethnic relations and the beginning of the Rock and Roll era.
Punk has declined into a death crawl. Due to new technology and sound mixing, the influence of changing culture with more supportive ideas, waves of individuality causing drastic changes in popular style; the transition from pure vocal to electronic overlay, to the journey from child to teenager full of angst and depression, bitterness, and fight. The change from rage to disgruntled and fragile stability and not completely complacent, shows how little the original feelings of rage have changed even though the exterior shows only growing frustration. Emotions bleed through and prove the truth in their words. Themes of life turning to death, rotting in coffins, play out alongside upbeat tempos, yelling and wailing guitar, while the lyrics prove that songs that reference dying represent life the best.
He, although the punk in-group was against conformity, conformed to the punk standards of unloving sex and natural equality between the sexes. The in-group of punk conformed to its own standards but refused to conform to most of society’s standards. Graffin also explains that punk comes in many different subcultures as he says: “A sixteen year old girl from an affluent religious family who shows up to church with her green Mohawk and FUCK JESUS shirt is punk. But so is a forty-two-year-old biology professor who claims that Charles Darwin’s ideas were wrong.”(20).
They had an unusual barroom swagger, but their distinctive style was the guitar. Not only did they love the guitar, but they introduced to the audience a triple-lead guitar sound. This band uses the four elements of music: rhythm, melody, harmony, and timbre. As I listened to their music, I could the rhythm in each of their songs. Some songs used a 2/4 signature time and a 4/4 signature time.
Rock “n” Roll was an example of a turning point for America in the 1950’s. Rock “n” Roll music was the newest sound for the generation. The music made people think more about racial barriers, brought people together, and led people to have a different outlook on the generation. Rock “n” Roll is a mixture of country, pop, blues, and gospel music. Rock “n” Roll includes the elements of a few black and white American music styles together.
During this period in the late 1930s and early 1940s, blues and jazz musicians under the western swing category “began to experiment with rhythmic music and amplification.” They also started to shout vocals and utilize solos with saxophones ("The Antecedents of 1950s Rock and Roll" 2013).All of those things are incredibly familiar and prevalent in rock and rollof the past and the present. As mentioned previously, country music also came in to impact rock and roll music slightly later in the 1940s and 1950s. Country, specifically rockabilly, introduced new instruments like the drums and electric guitar to rock music allowing it to have a wider variety of rhthyms and sound. It also served as one of the first ways for female singers to get into the music business by performing this southern style of music ("The Antecedents of 1950s Rock and Roll"
With today’s American teens, the concept of social norms can be easily be pointed out. As social norms is an established manner of behavior maintained by a society, teens today can easily be argued to follow a manner of behavior, such as texting, taking selfies, and wearing the latest trends. The ,hipster, is unique to today’s American teens, an example of visual representation and a subculture. Even with our own personal experience and observations, most teens today represent the typical hipster. Skinny jeans, chunky glasses, and checkered or plain T-shirts, the American teen hipster is a recognizable figure in the modern U.S. As a subculture to today’s teens, the hipster movement brought about new styles of music and fashion.

Punks style of music is considered uneducated, raw, and rough because of the vessel in which it is administered. Kids with giant, dyed mohawks, leather jackets with studs, and screaming into a microphone was not the typical way to get your message out to the masses. However, their message of tolerance, police brutality, and corporate scams have all hit the headlines over the last decade which brings into question, is punk music uneducated, or was it considered uneducated because of the way the bands portrayed themselves?
