The Worth of an Individual is Powerful Over time, life is going to constantly change and develop in a way that affects not only the time one is in but the time to come. Puritanism consisted of Puritans who were a very diverse group that stood up for religious purity in the 16th, 17th and the 18th centuries. They also believed the English Reformation had not gone far enough and the national Church needed to be purified as well. The view of self through Puritans was self discipline, avoiding temptation, and aloneness of each believer with an enigmatic God. Following Puritanism, Deism came after rejecting the mythical aspects of religion, such as the Bible. Deism was the idea that God created the universe, yet remains apart from it. After Deism, Transcendentalism sparked as a philosophical movement that started in the mid 1840’s, ‘50s, and ‘60s. The overall aspect of the human being was live every moment for itself, self-sufficiency and reform begins within one. The perspective of oneself significantly developed between Puritanism to Deism, yet a slight alteration occurred from Deism to Transcendentalism. Throughout time, the improvement of self is shown evident in the writings of Anne Bradstreet, a woman whose house burned down, Patrick Henry, who defended his resolution to the Virginia Convention, and Henry David Thoreau, who stood up for his beliefs against the government. In the poem, Here Follow Some Verses upon the Burning of Our House, Anne Bradstreet clarifies that “it was His own, it was not mine”(17). Anne is stating her belongings that are burning in the fire do not belong to her and they all are God’s possessions. As a Puritan, Anne does not believe she is living her life for her
