The Puritans believe that all people are sinners and not perfect, but they have hope for a better world due to their obedience, love, and dependence of God. The Puritans believe that are given the task of purifying the English Church by God. At first, they are persecuted, but they leave for the “New World.” In the new world, they still struggle to find peace from natural and human hardships. With their vision of hope, the Puritans believe that things will get better. Throughout the years, the Puritans lose their following. It is with hope that these writers write for a chance to rejuvenate their faith once again. The Puritan people’s dependence on God begins to wane and the people start to rely on materials and machines more often. The Puritan people begin to lose the reason that they came to this new land. The Puritans left everything they knew in order to practice their faith in peace, but now the Puritans are losing their way. Luckily for them, there are people who still who a have glimpse of hope that fell they can revitalize the faith. In Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, Jonathan Edwards states that the Puritan people have lost their way and that the people are sinners who need to be punished. He says that their “wickedness makes [them] as heavy as lead, and to tend downwards with great weight and pressure towards hell” (109).
