Skills USA has many different programs that they could explore training in such as automotive services, cosmetology, first aid/CPR, medical terminology, nursing assistant, culinary arts, photography, restaurant services and many more (Stahr pg 2-3) Pros/Cons As principal at Ashland-Greenwood you know that a majority of our students come from low-income families where college, whether it be a two-year or a four-year college, is not on the parents or child’s radar. With the skills that the children can learn from Skills USA they would be able to put forth what they know directly out of high school filling the skills gap.

Originally, schools sort the individuals to meet the needs of the labor market, improve skills of individuals which made them more productive on the job resulting in an increase if economic growth and help supplied the demands of the workforce and needs of students. As the years passed, there is a push for academic and vocational school. The vocational school allows students to learn a trade or skill that prepares them for the workforce. Vocational education was advocated as an important answer to economic problems facing the U.S. A vocational guidance counselor has to understand needs of the job market and requirements. “Vocational faculties, either by choice or because they have been rebuffed by their liberal arts colleagues, do not collaborate enough with Arts and Sciences faculties to prepare their students well for purposes other than performing the tasks demanded by their jobs. The pressure to respond appropriately to vocational needs will not diminish in the foreseeable future”(48). Each area of study both has its drawbacks, but together they can fill the spaces both degrees leave behind and create an amazing environment for undergraduates to train for careers and acquire moral and familial practices. The needs of both vocational and liberal arts often overlap so it would increasingly easy to combine the two programs. Without the help of liberal arts, vocational programs will fall short of pleasing employers and helping their students lead fulfilling lives.

Reflecting on my personal and educational goals I believe UNCW, Wilmington will not only allow me to grow as a student or person, but will create new challenges in my life that will lead to fulfilling my goal of becoming a successful woman someday. Growing up in a small town off the Coast of Maine, I have grown up learning to do things on my own and that things in life aren 't handed to you. Since I was able to work I have been; racking blueberries, hauling lobster traps, digging for clams, working in diners, and much more. I have learned to be independent and to not have to rely on others. My educational goal is to earn a degree in Biology and Spanish from the University of California, Riverside, in hopes of getting a job inside the laboratory department at Kaiser. Based on labs that I have already done at the University, I found that I enjoy working in a similar setting. I would love to have the opportunity to shadow a connoisseur in a similar work environment, as it would be a valuable learning experience. I come from a low-income family in Oakland, California. The economic barrier that has restricted my family has prevented us from moving out from where we live.

The education system produces skills that are not valued by employers, while raising the expectations of those who acquire them. Consequently, the unemployed do not take up existing job vacancies, and employers are unwilling to hire available candidates (Njonjo, 2010). The mismatch is more marked for school leavers and graduates who have just finished school, partly providing an explanation for the high unemployment rate among youth and new entrants into the job market. The suggested remedy is to reform the education system and increase focus on technical education and vocational training, matching them to the needs of the job market (Coenjaerts et al. 2009).
