The information processing approach is an approach that observes and analyses the mental process involved in processing information. For the purpose of my Early Cognitive Class at National University, I will discuss in detail how memory is divided into three categories and provide an example of how I was able to store information into my long term memory. This is where metacognition comes to play. Metacognition is thinking about thinking. Basically, it means one’s awareness and to have the ability to regulate one’s own thinking and monitor one’s own understanding. It sounds a bit complicated but in reality is not hard. Our goal as educators should be that we should teach our students that we should be good thinkers, think about the way they think about things, and monitor their own learning. There are Metacognition strategies that we can apply to our classrooms to help our students be good thinkers and successfully learners. For example, when teaching a topic, we can help students make songs so that they can remember the topic better. Role playing is another way to help students learn better. In addition, it is important for students to ask questions and reflect on their learning and how they learn best. Also, every student is different so it is important to teach student to compare their strategies and use the ones that work best for them.
