Personal Statement for NQT Year I have been lucky enough to have been taught by some truly inspirational teachers and am aware of the effect they have had on my life and the choices I have made subsequently. My own passion for working with young children extends from my desire to emulate these role models and perform the same inspirational function in the lives of my students. I have always enjoyed being around young people and have supplemented my interests in primary teaching with as much work experience as possible. I completed my PGCE Education course and qualified in 2006.
I believe education is one of the most important tools a person can have in life. Every student deserves the best possible education, irrespective of needs and abilities. All students have gifts and talents as part of themselves. I believe that anyone working with a special needs student has the responsibility to identify those gifts that often go unnoticed. People too often focus on the deficiencies of students with special needs.

First Year Teacher When it comes to teaching most people get into the field because they want to have a career that fulfills them, gives them a sense of purpose, and feel significant. It’s a great feeling to come across. But to get there you must be able to adapt and be effective as you took on the grueling challenges that come your way as a first year teacher. It’s stage in your career that you will most likely have mixed emotions of whether it’s a career for you. In my opinion, this is one of the upsides to becoming a special education teacher. Right now, in my life I don’t like to do much more school than I need to, so four years seems better, in my mind, than the six years it would take to become an occupational therapist. My mind could end up changing as I grow older, but for now that is just my thoughts. Some of the courses that may end up being on the path to becoming a special education teacher are, methods, foundations of education, assistive technology, assessment, special education law, and planning and curriculum focused on special needs (Teacher Certification Degrees). Many things play into the role of a professional teacher. The teacher serves as a role model to their students, in some cases the only positive role model a child sees. Failing to act in a professional may lead to setting a bad example to the students and cause the students to lose respect for the teacher. A teacher must maintain the respect of not only their students, parents, but also their colleagues, and administrators and provide their students with the best education while demonstrating professionalism in all parts of their career. When teachers interact with students and parents, teachers must understand there is a fine line between being a caring teacher and a friend to the student or the parent.
When I was in middle school, I became interested in how the mind works and how people learn. My mom taught emotionally and intellectually disabled high school students, and when I was in the 8th grade, I shadowed her for a day. I was previously well-aware that teaching is a challenging career, but that day I realized the immense challenge of teaching children with special needs. In her math class of about 12 students, she had a broad range of academic abilities from students who could not count to students who were able to do simple multiplication. Therefore, I learned that it is difficult for these students to receive the instruction they need because they are all on different levels.
