Pursuing The Geography AS Course

Geography is one of the most relevant and constantly evolving subjects and is something I would love to continue studying. My passion for Geography began with early childhood memories of travelling to Mount Vesuvius, which intrigued my quizzical mind as to how the volcano got there and how it affected the people of Pompeii from the eruption in 79 AD. I have always been excited to explore different geographical processes that have defined and continued to change our landscapes. I enjoyed all aspects of the geography AS course, having a particular fascination with both human and physical aspects as I believe the two are intrinsically linked and constantly changing. A key issue that intrigues me is the link between population growth and resource sustainability. The pessimistic ideas of Malthus were supported by evidence such as the Great Chinese famine of the late 1950s. Global population is projected to reach nine billion by 2045, this exceeds the rate at which food production grows. A key question I am interested in is whether the contrasting optimistic views of Boserup will mean that the rate of food production will meet the needs of the global population. …show more content…

I have improved my analytical and theoretical skills by studying spatial and environmental data. For example, my fieldwork investigation as part of the AS course took me to the River Arrow where I investigated characteristics of the river channel to see if the river corresponded with the ideas of the Bradshaw model. My other A Level subjects; Sociology and Business Studies compliment Geography well because they are both analytical subjects which have developed my extended writing skills and this is essential to aid my studies at degree
