The artwork that I have chosen to visually analyze is Town of Harrisonburg, VA by Emma Lyon Bryan. It was created in 1867 and is an oil on canvas painting. This artwork is located in the Duke Hall Gallery of Fine Art at James Madison University and is around 36” long and 24” high. This piece is a depiction of what Harrisonburg looked like in 1867. Bryan’s artwork is held in a wooden glass frame with a gold border and displays the buildings of the town, dirt roads, open land, mountains, and many other small details.
As previously mentioned in the previous chapter regarding the life of Moses, sometime around 1446BC, he goes to discuss with the Pharaoh the release of the Israelites from slavery. The Pharaoh refuses to release the Israelites, consquently, God releases ten plagues onto Egypt to force the Pharaoh to let the Israelites leave Egypt. The ten plagues consisted of water into blood, frogs, lice, swarm of flies, diseased livestock, men and animals will break out with boils, thunderstorm of hail and fire, locusts, three days of darkness and death of all first-born son and daughters. The Pharaoh finally consents to the Israelites leaving Egypt allowing Moses to organize the Israelites and begin their 40 year journey back to Canaan, but the Pharaoh commands a group of his soldiers to chase after and kill all of the Israelites. Not only has my understanding of the state’s history broadened, but my view of Ohio in general has been elevated. I’ve learned about how geography has affected Ohio’s growth and development, and also how Ohio has influenced the growth and development of the nation. Ohio has played a major role in our country socially, economically, and politically.

In the book Why Geography Matters: Three Challenges Facing America; By Harm de Blij I learned many things and my perspective about the world and what's going on it has changed after reading this book. After reading this I wished that I had payed more attention to what was going on in the world and now, I will work hard to keep being aware of the world so I am no longer ignorant of it. Harm De Blij points out many things and makes clearer for me. In Why Geography Matters, Harm de Blij exhibits how geography's viewpoints yield one of a kind bits of knowledge into the inter connections that stamp out onto our ever changing world. The book talks about three major problems.

In " The Gettyburg Address " given by Abraham Lincoln at the cemetery at Gettysburg, Lincoln uses parallism, antithesis, and repetiton to emphasize the idea that this battlefield has been made holy by those who fought for the idea of freedom and in order to keep that idea alive we must continue to fight thier fight. First, throughout his famous speech, Lincoln uses parallesim to make the point that this ground cannot be consecrated because the brave men who died here have already concecrated it. Geography is the study of our planet 's landscapes, peoples, places and environments, global issues, the human impact on the environment and also, the interconnectedness of the world and our communities within it. Human geography takes into account the dynamics of cultures, societies, and economies, and physical geography studies the physical landscapes and the environment.
Texas’s geography is diverse throughout its regions. Texas has 4 regions, the mountain and basin, the Coastal plains, the North Central plains, and the Great plains. Each region is a different type of geography unique to its own. These regions also have their own big cities that have their own characteristics. Every city has its own focus on what they want to make in that city.

In the chapter “Geography Matters”, Thomas C. Foster explains the effect of geography on a story. Geography contributes greatly to themes, symbols, and plot, and most authors prefer to use setting as a general area with a detailed landscape rather than a specific city or landmark. In Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, he does not reveal the actual region of America that the man and boy are traveling in, but describes the mountains and eventual beaches of their path. McCarthy might not have revealed their location because it might ruin the reader’s interpretation of the setting. For example, the pair come across a generic “gap” between mountains and this is a turning point because it confirms the man’s planned path to the south.
Over the this past semester in freshman composition I have learned how to write a college level paper. Going into this class, I was a little unsure and scared that I wasn’t going to be able to do the things that were required for me to do. As the semester passed I could definitely see a change in my writing. I learned how to use the appropriate punctuation, how to write and refute an argumentation paper, which I believe is my strongest piece of writing and how to research and gather information to write a strong research paper. I knew coming into this class that I was going to struggle with my punctuations, word choice, and the overall flow of the paper.
My Writing Experience In previous courses, my writing skills have been mediocre or just enough to pass the class. Throughout the duration of this course, I have written a variety of papers using different techniques and skills. Previously I would write assuming that the only audience would be my instructor. This course has helped me realize that there are many steps and skills involved with writing a well-organized and easy to comprehend essay.
Major assignments -Work Projects- taught me how to write essays and include employed academic documentation (MLA). In this course, I’ve completed various reading assignments, did independent analytical thinking about what I’ve read, participate in discussions on what I’ve read, write about what I’ve read, and carry out research, this emphasis on reading was to show the importance of critical reading, and how it is going to benefit my studies. Understanding this academic essay structure, the use of rhetorical strategies in essay writing, writing a summary, formulating a thesis, and writing essays using rhetorical strategies.
