Russia has a long, complicated history. Russians are used to having strong leaders and centralized power. The attraction to having strong leaders is evident from the history of ruling of tsars pre-1917, motivated by the fear of invasion and internal subversion. Because Russia is geographically very large, it’s susceptible to invasion. There were invasions conducted by Poland and Napoleon. Russia was defeated by Germany and Austria and WWI (1914-1917), only to make the ultimate comeback in WWII. The Soviet Union was a victorious player in WWII, however its economy had fallen sharply because of the war. The West favored Putin, but Putin was scheming the development and organization of the FSB to “start implementing a full state consolidation in the coming years.” Putin offered assistance to Bush during the after the 9/11 attack, which was an opportunity to strengthen Russia and US relations. Putin took this opportunity of Western instability to consolidate problems in Russia without catching attention from the West. The Kremlin then executed the following things: “ejected foreign firms, nationalized strategic economic assets, shut down NGOs, purged anti-Kremlin journalists, banned anti-Kremlin political parties, launched second intense war in Chechnya” https://www.stratfor.com/weekly/20110704-russias-evolving-leadership Something that has recently evolved in the Russian political scene is the emergence of democratic tendencies. United Russia has allowed more independent political parties, and has shifted to develop factions supportive of conservative and liberal beliefs, as well as youth organizations. The 3 current parties present in the government are Just Russia, the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia, and the Communist Party. Concerning international relations, a new party has been launched by Mikhail Prokhorov called Russia’s Right Cause. One of Russia’s main economic bases isa the market. It’s typical that Russia could make sporadic decisions politically, and that shows that the rules of the market are based off of political dependency. For the past 10 years, the US and Russia business relations have been understanding and been going very well. The cultural barrier has been proven not to be so much of a barrier at all, and has proven to be sbetter than the cultural barrier seenw ith Europe. Tee U.S. and Russia have an interesting relationship in that the mentality of the Cold War is consciously present, and there’ no way to break the tensions. Neither US or Russia has a layer ut plan, so it’s all up to the other factors. Apparently Russia is making an attempt to be a geopolitical center, supporting a civilization that follows the traditional conservative values.
