Authoritarian states often dehumanize, or severely degrade, every aspect of their citizens’ lives. Though the intention varies, usually from suppressing dissent or ensuring their dominance, these states take complete control. Individuals that reside in these countries are stripped of their humanity, deprived of basic human qualities and liberties. These citizens are given limited to no opportunities to pursue genuine happiness due to the frequent manipulation that is exercised by corrupted governments. This problematic issue of dehumanization is brilliantly illustrated throughout Ayn Rand’s novels, We the Living and Anthem. By suppressing his opposition and taking advantage of others, Vladmir Putin has weakened the citizens of Russia. It is said that, “He manipulates the public consciousness like a talented conductor…” (Gromenko). Putin has dehumanized residents of Russia in countless ways, including his harassment of activists, censorship of the media, assassinations of journalists, etc. While Russia has been sufficiently prosperous over the years, its society lacks individuality and basic freedoms due to the conformity Putin encourages. Staying informed, whether it is through trusted news sources or word-of-mouth, increases awareness amongst citizens regarding the current circumstances. The more individuals conscious of their corrupt society, the more likely they are to make a change. This logic is illustrated in Rand’s dystopian novel Anthem, as Equality 7-2521 chose to share his invention of the light bulb rather than sticking to his society’s values of collectivism and conformity. The protagonist states, “‘Let us bring a new light to men!’” (Rand 71). Though his attempt was unsuccessful, by sharing his thoughts and ideas, Equality 7-2521 challenged the dehumanization present in his oppressive society. Keeping others informed of significant occurrences may not seem like an effective response to dehumanization, but it contributes to a more prepared and educated society
