“Most police organizations have adopted the quasi-military command structure, which is characterized by a rigid rank hierarchy of authority, impersonality, and an authoritarian command system (Jermier, 2)”. The similarities between the police and military structures are that they both consist of command structure that are hierarchical, meaning that it starts from the top down. Their organizational styles are authoritarian and requires strict adherence to established rules, practices and policies from subordinates to their superiors, and have punishment in place for those who do not comply with those policies. The military and officers have the legal authority to carry weapons and can use physical force, deadly force, or deprive people of their liberty in the interests of enforcing laws. Other functions that military and police share is the requirements that those in the organization are prepared whenever the mission requires.
