Carpetbaggers were northerners that went South to help Reconstruction efforts and freedmen. The Scalawags were Southern whites who supported Reconstruction. Radical Republicans were congressmen that supported African-American citizenship and punishment for former confederates. The KKK (Ku Klux Klan) didn't like the former slaves freedom or Reconstruction. The North put the army in the South to hold elections for new state governments and protect the freedmen.
1. “How did Lincoln and Johnson each approach reconstruction?” Johnson did not have Lincoln’s moral sense and political judgement when it came to reconstruction. “As wartime president, Lincoln had offered amnesty to all but high-ranking Confederates” (464). Lincoln had proposed that when ten percent of a rebellious states voters had sworn loyalty (taken an oath), then the state would be restored to the Union as long as it had approved the thirteenth amendment to abolish slavery.
Pertaining to the rights of African Americans a new south did not appear after the reconstruction. While they were “free” they were often treated harshly and kept in a version of economic slavery by either their former masters or other white people in power. Sharecropping and the crop-lien system often had a negative impact on both the black and white tenants keeping them in debt with the owner. Jim Crow laws, vigilantes and various means of disfranchisement became the normal way of life in the South. It was believed that white people were superior to black people and when they moved up in politics or socially they were harassed and threatened.
The KKK was a white nationalized group that included former veterans, which created the first branch of the group. The Klansmen founded in 1865, in Pulaski, Tennessee, is now known as the birthplace of the KKK. This group dedicated themselves to a campaign of violence to Republican leaders and voters. As people began to make new of something they have killed it as well. It was in the 1800’s after the Civil War when reconstruction started to form reconstruction. With grant as the president of the United States, reconstruction was formed to help transition after the civil war to reconnect the states and help freedmen into society. There was an opposing terrorist group known as the KKK. Their goal was to end reconstruction and belittle freedman.
The states that separated the North from the South served as a gateway for industrial revolution. Both the North and the South had many provincial differences, and perhaps nowhere was more uniquely defined than Chattanooga, TN. Chattanooga served as the “new beginning for men” of the South. The industrial growth of Chattanooga grew steadily.
The Ku Klux Klan first emerged in Pulaski, Tennessee following the Civil War. As we know today, the mere mention of the Klan triggers fear as the KKK is known for its various tactics of violence that came in the form if lynchings, murders, and mutilations. Following their emergence, the KKK were quickly symbolized and portrayed as the protectors of the South, following the defeat of the Southern states in the Civil War and the beginning of the period of Reconstruction by the federal government (Gurr, 1989, p. 132). During the 1920s, the KKK achieved its greatest political success and growth outside of the South. During this period, the membership of the Klan heavily expanded to the states of Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Oregon, to which the KKK obtained two to two and one-half million members at its apex.
After the defeat in the Civil War, Arkansas and the other Confederate states had no choice but to accept the idea of “reconstruction” and defeat. Arkansas had mainly been ran by the Democratic Party, but the Republican Party was on the rise after the Civil War. Both parties had different and distinct goals for the reconstruction of Arkansas. The Democratic Party was interested in rebuilding Arkansas while the Republican Party was interested in changing the state’s government all together. Throughout the Reconstruction period, the Democrats and Republicans held different goals for the “reconstruction” of Arkansas.
After the Civil War, a group called the Ku Klux Klan, better known today as the KKK, was formed. This group made it almost impossible for new African American citizens to exercise their rights. This group used physical assault and murder to express their opinion about African Americans at that time. In Document B, an image is shown of a member of the KKK teaming up with a member of the White League. Below the two, a small family of slaves huddles together in fear.
The Ku Klux Klan or KKK has created centuries of fear. They originated in Pulaski, Tennessee. The famous hate group was out to re establish white supremacy. The KKK has influenced local governments and people in power. It has also had an impact on American people and specifically black minorities.
Reconstruction was an attempt to rebuild the country after the Civil War and tried to end the hatred between the North and South. In Reconstruction, the South was getting ready to come back to the USA after the Civil War. Reconstruction was supposed rebuild the South physically, and it was supposed to change the South’s thoughts on full equality for all races. The South thought that whites should always be superior, and that full equality should never happen. The North thought that equality was what should happen.

This segregation gave way to White Supremacy groups that exist to conserve the social order that was established by the Jim Crow laws. The Ku Klux Klan is the most widely known of all the groups that came about in the period. The “Klan” as it is also known advocated extremist positions in the fields of white supremacy, white nationalism, and also anti-immigration. The first “Klan” flourished in the South of the United States of America in the late 1860s immediately after the Civil War.
The South killed Reconstruction most by their resistance against the North. Reconstruction started after the Civil war between 1865-1876. During the Civil War, the North and South battled, (The North won) and the South laid in ruins. The United States was willing to let the South back in under some conditions, and that marked the day Reconstruction started. During the Reconstruction era, the South resisted the North’s help and Reconstruction died.
Racism. A word that people either shy away from or express in their every day lives. Predominately, the South is stigmatized as being a very racist and confederate region of America. Throughout history there have been many incidents and events that have explicably revolved around the color of your skin. The Civil War was a war based off of opposing opinions to have slaves or not between the North and the South of the United States.
