There are many historical questions that this source could answer. Since this source is a creation myth, it could give historians answers as to what the Quiche people believed. Another question that this source could answer is the types of traditions that the Quiche people had and how they were influenced by the creation myth. One other question this source could answer is what type of environment that the Quiche people live in, as it references many types of animals that are only specific to one region, such as the fer-de-lance snake. From this, historians can infer that the region that the Quiche people lived in, since fer-de-lance snakes only live in moist regions which implies a rainforest of some sort, which would also explain the jaguars that are mentioned in the story. Additionally, this source could answer the question of how the Quiche people viewed themselves in relation to their creator god known as the Plumed Serpent.
Just from reading the text, there is absolutely no way to be sure of who the author of this source is. The author could be some type of spiritual leader. The entire story introduces a great creator who had a difficult time creating humans, and once humans were created, they were considered too powerful and stripped of that power. Consider purpose of the text to be two-fold. The first purpose of the source is meant to give a great account of the origin of the universe, which just like any other creation myth is an attempt to answer a great philosophical question.
