Cassy’s superior intellect enables her to study Simon carefully revealing his fears and superstitions, weapons she used to defeat him. Cassy uses an attic in the old house to her advantage. This attic is believed to be haunted by a negro woman who was confined in it by Legree himself. She was out up there after being disobedient. The servants of Legree don’t know what happened exactly, but they do know that her body was taken down from it and buried. They later started to say that they could hear sounds of violent blows and groans of despair coming from the attic. Legree did not like his creatures speaking of such things ,so he forbid them to tell stories of the attic and whoever did would find out what exactly is up there for he would chain them in the attic for a week. …show more content…

Cassy used the superstitions of everyone in the house and began to plan out her escape. The room that Cassy slept in was right under the attic and without telling Legree, she changed up and moved all the furniture in her room. Later that day after Legree returned, he asked Cassy why she moved her room around and Cassy responded with “I’d like to get some sleep, now and then.” He asked her what kept her from sleeping and Cassy said “Only groans, and people scuffing, and rolling around on the attic floor.” Legree simply laughed walked uneasily into the sitting-room. Inside the attic there was a knot-hole that opened up and Cassy inserted a neck of a bottle a ceratin way that when there was least wind, wailing sounds proceeded from it. Also when there was high winds the sound would increase to a perfect shriek. The sounds were heard from time to time by the servants and it revived the memory of the old ghost legend.
