Susan Cain begins the introduction to her book by stating that one of the most well know woman, Rosa Parks, was an introvert. She also informs the us that one out of every two or three people we know are introverts;however, we are not aware of it, due to the fact that our society values the extrovert ideal and those who are inverts must conform, In chapter one, Cain discusses in great depth how the ideal self in our society shifted from serious, disciplined, and honorable to gregorius, alpha and comfortable in the spotlight. According to Cain, we shifted from a society that values actual character to one that only values personality.
Extroverts can be some of the best people you meet. They have plenty to offer and thrive at the attention of others. However, being introverted can be just as great. In a society where being extroverted is the ideal, it can be very difficult to be an introvert. Susan Cain argues in her Ted Talk, “The Power of Introverts”, that introverts can share many brilliant ideas with the world and should be encouraged and celebrated for who they are.

Abandoning one’s family could be devastating for some people, but for Mattia Pascal, it was a dream. In The Late Mattia Pascal, the main character, Mattia had lost everything from family to family fortunes multiple times. He went from having a large inheritance from his parent’s passing, to losing it all. He was the father of two daughters that passed away within seconds of each other, which occured on the same day as his mother’s passing. After this, Mattia’s remarries and finds that he is miserable in his new life because of his living environment with his wife and demanding mother in law.
Every individual goes through different experiences that mold them into who they are. The combination of their genetic makeup, the environment in which an individual is exposed to, peers, culture, and many other factors determine who they are as an individual (Twenge & Campbell, 2016). This is also what is considered to be an individual’s personality. It is the greatest influence on how an individual will react in any given situation; not everyone will react the same in any situation. Personality is the recurring patterns of thoughts, behaviors, and feelings that can be seen across all situations and time (Twenge & Campbell, 2016, p. 6).
Bonnie Tucker and Matt Hamill; How are They the Same and How are They Different In the book, The Feel of Silence by Bonnie Tucker, you see the story of a young woman growing up deaf. Although medically and physically she is profoundly deaf, in the mind and heart she desperately wants to be a part of the hearing world. Even in her older years she never really accepted her deafness totally. On one hand you have the Deaf people in the world who are like Bonnie, but on the other you see people like the hammer, formally known as Matt Hamill.
In the story Quiet, by Susan Cain, she states the differences, effects, and changes that the culture of character and culture of personality made on society over time. The culture of character is different from the culture of personality. They’re different because the culture of character focuses on self identity and the culture of personality focuses on how others view you. The culture of character focuses on self identity.
I feel as if all of these quotes taken from the lyrics The End of Silence written by Elaine Brown really capture the beginning of the novel. I believe so because in the beginning the girls are ready to meet up with their mother again for the first time in four years and when they do, she just tends to hurt them even more. In the novel the characters talk about eating the chinese food at the dinner table and it just being completely silent. Also the quote, “You been burning inside” could represent the feelings the girls felt when the Mother, Cecile, wouldn’t call Fern by her name and just call her “little girl”. These lyrics could also relate to the novel as you continue to read.

As an adolescent I tended to be very discreet and shy at times, especially around girls my age. Overall I was a very awkward child. While attending a coed elementary school at Monroe it was very intimidating. There were girls that were always trying to talk to me and I just wasn’t sure how to react to the situation.
