The advancement of race, class, and gender relations since the 1850s Our society has changed so drastically since the 1850s. Race, class, and gender relations have advanced is so many ways. Everyone has a whole has fought and overcome a numerous amount of topics and situations. Today everyone is equally viewed the same, races are diverse, class divide is not as strict, and people’s sexualities and genders are accepted. These changes are so very important because it is the way we live and has shaped our society, country, and our world. My goal in this paper is to address the changes that we have experienced involving race, class, and gender relations since the nineteenth century by first researching and then comparing texts regarding the history …show more content…

During the nineteenth century people were divided in classes referred to as the elite, middle, and working class citizens. The economic elite personal were those that maintained a growing wealth, and a well known position in the society. The elites tended to develop industrial capitals that were made up of the middle and working class personnel. The middle class were people who did not have enough wealth and success to become a member in the elite division but they still owned small businesses and sent their children to school. Philschatz.com “ A New Social Order: Class Division” states that this class was disciplined and believed “ hard work and education enabled them to rise in life.” The last but not least class was the working class, this social division was the class of wage workers. The men worked hard jobs in factories and on farms for low wages. Sometimes their children had to put forth their abilities in the factories as well to help the families live. This class formed their own neighborhoods. In today’s society there are still an elite class called the upper class that entails the wealthy folks, a middle class that “work hard and live fairly comfortable lives” (Class Structure in the United States). Men went off everyday to work and make a living while the women were the established house and children care givers. Women were not able to work like the men were. During the late 1800s a huge women’s movement occurred to fight for women’s rights. Today, women can vote, are free to work and have the same legal abilities as anyone else. . Just to ensure there are equal rights, there are now laws for women such as ABA section of individual rights and responsibilities, breastfeeding, center for health and gender equity, pregnancy discrimination, abortion, and equal pay. Also in the twenty-first century a new gender has been accepted into the world known as transgenders. Back in the 1850s transgenders had to hide their sexualities from those around them as they were viewed wrong and disturbing.
