After the Civil War, between the years, 1865 through 1870 the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments was adopted by the United States. The United States abolished slavery, providing equal protection for freed slaves, and prohibited discrimination of colored voters. The Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments granted former slaves the freedom to pursue happiness, but in 1868, the “separate but equal” doctrine kept these amendments from bearing fruit. For nearly a century the “separate but equal” doctrine promoted segregation, and the Supreme Court it was constitutional to keep blacks and whites separate as long as they had equal rights to education, public transportation, and restrooms. However, the definition of equality in the south was very vague and ambiguous.

After slavery was abolished, inequality in American society ran high, and many laws were put in place to restrict the rights and abilities of African Americans. Some laws include the Jim Crow Laws (1870 to 1950s) and the Supreme Court Ruling of Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) that ruled that there could be “separate but equal” facilities and services for people of color and white Americans.
A system of laws discriminating against African Americans known as Jim Crow laws, extended all over the United States. At that time, it was legal to separate any organization or public amenity into ‘whites only' and 'blacks only.' For a long time, public transportation, cafeterias, rest areas, entertainment facility, movie houses, and even the United States Army could be legally separated. There were also rules and laws made to forbid the African Americans from casting votes. Often, the equality never existed even though the law stated it.
In 1865, Abraham Lincoln ended slavery in the United States. While the African Americans became free, they were still not equal. Horrible things were still happening to former slaves, even though the U.S. was trying to reconstruct the country. Reconstruction was a time where former slaves were being integrated into society. The same year slavery was abolished, The Black Codes were created.
Before the American Civil War happened close to four million African-Americans were slaves. At the turn of the century the Naturalization Act of 1970 allowed only white men to vote. After the Civil War the thirteenth (1865), fourteenth (1868) and fifteenth (1870) amendments were passed, allowing African-American males to vote and have citizenship, which also led to ending slavery. Even after the ending of slavery, there were still some white men who tried to keep white supremacy alive thereby dehumanizing and alienating African-Americans from the mainstream of people. Even after African-Americans were given all their rights, there were still problems with racial segregation.
Before, during, and long after the Civil War blacks were discriminated against in almost every form of life. They had to fight and be patient to be accepted as equals among their white counterparts; this process took form over a long period of time, and after many failures, blacks were truly equal in the eyes of the government. The thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth amendments which were passed in the late 1860’s were supposed to bring political, social, and economic equality for the blacks; however, this was not the case, while in some facets of life blacks obtained more freedoms they had to wait many years after these amendments were passed to be fully equal to whites. The thirteenth amendment abolished slavery in the United States.
In the late 1800’s, equal rights for women and African Americans was an argued issue. Although slavery ended in 1865, African Americans were continued to be treated unfairly and looked down upon. Throughout history, many court cases were fought for equal rights. Blacks and whites could not go to the same schools.
One would think that by now in 2016, the United States would be the land of equal opportunity, but sadly America is still trapped in time in the 1850s. The 1850s was the period of Reconstruction when African Americans were supposedly given their freedom. Although African Americans were given freedom, they still were not given the same equality as whites. They were treated differently than the whites. Laws in the southern states kept the African Americans from growing economically, socially and educationally.
If a person from 1975 through to the present and see black and white people are studying in the same school and sitting together, the person might doubt that what he saw. “The case Brown v. Board of education happened on May 17, 1954 in the United States. Before this case, Plessy v. Ferguson case was adopted by the supreme court at 1896, which was segregation not violated the fourteenth amendment so that separate race is equal in law.” (Duignan) Even though Abraham Lincoln abolished slavery and gave black people the right to vote after he became the president of the United States in 1861, it does not lead to the equal between white and black at that moment.
Segregation was allowed in the United States of America as the 14th amendment abolished slavery, but left gaps on the topic of fair segregation on all levels.

In the late 18th and 19th century, America like most of the world practiced a horrible act called Slavery, which is the state of being a slave. Slaveholders were not very kind to slaves in fact they were harsh. They used to beat them up, burn them, they did not tell the slaves their real names so the slaves would not know anything about their background and most importantly they did not give them the right to be educated. Slaveholders were afraid if a slave or an African-American received any kind of education because that would cause a chaos in the white and the black society. African-Americans aka Slaves were kept ignorant.
After a troublesome and torrid time, the black people or what so called slaves, were entering the 20th century with hope of not being discriminated after the slavery had been abolished in the late 19th century. The beginning of 20th century had overseen the stampede of worldwide immigrants to America as they seek for a better life. As for African-Americans, they were entering the phase where they found themselves almost identical with the past century despite the slavery being abolished. Though the abolishment of slavery was written in the 13th Amendment, some of the states still legalized it. They were still in the same position as they were before in some of the states in America.
There are a range of strategies to use to challenge discriminatory or bias comments from children. An educator could start with asking the child making the derogatory statements how they would feel if somebody talked to them like that or spoke about them like that. By giving them the understanding of what they had said isn’t very pleasant or enjoyable they would then gain the knowledge that the child being discriminated against would feel like “It is not nice or I didn’t like it”. Triggering this emotion in turn would resinate in the child and they no longer would find it appropriate to bully culture specification. Another strategy could be to have the children talk about any experiences they have had or have seen and reassure them that it
