In Jerry Spinelli’s novel, Maniac Magee, Spinelli describes the character Amanda Beale as passionate. When we first see Amanda, we see her lugging around a suitcase of books. She has all of her the books that she owns in that suitcase because if they were not in that suitcase they would be getting destroyed by her little siblings. Amanda is so passionate about her books, that she would carry all of them to school everyday, just so that they would stay in nice condition. Another example of Amanda being passionate is that when Jeffrey Magee asks Amanda if he can borrow one of her books, Amanda truly did not want to lend him one.
In The Orphan Train a life of hardship and loneliness bring a troubled seventeen year old Molly looking for belonging and acceptance and a lonely ninety-one year old woman with a secret past to find that they have more in common than just cleaning out an attic. Seventeen year old Molly has her gothic looks and vegan lifestyle that her foster parents are fed up with. After Molly is caught stealing a book from the library, she is sent to serve her community service at Vivian’s huge mansion helping the woman clean out her attic. As Molly and Vivian go through the boxes in Vivian’s attic they discover something more than some old junk; they discover their identities.

While reading the book titled Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline, I was introduced to several characters. First, we are introduced to Molly, a troubled foster kid in a bad situation. Throughout the book Sarah is constantly battling with herself, trying not to be found out to be a girl until the unexpected happened.

The teacher, Ms. Price picks up a sweater and asks the class if anyone is missing a sweater. A student says that it's Rachel's, and the teacher gives her the sweater without even thinking. Rachel thinks and speaks in a way that is very reminiscent of an eleven year old. There is a youthful, innocent tone in her voice, especially when she says “I wish I was one hundred and two instead of eleven” without actually thinking about the disadvantages of being that age. Throughout the day, she references home and how she longs to go home to celebrate with her family and eat cake.

Tennessee Williams is acclaimed for his ability to create multi faced characters such as Blanche Dubois in the play, A Streetcar Named Desire. She comes to New Orleans after losing everything including her job, money, and her family’s plantation Belle Reve, to live with her sister Stella. During her time there she causes many conflicts with Stella’s husband Stanley and tries to get involved with the people there, all while judging them for their place in society, although she is imperfect too. Through her, Williams has created a complex character. She is lost, confused, conflicted, lashing out in sexual ways, and living in her own fantasies throughout the entirety of the play.
“A Rose for Emily” is a dark, suspenseful Gothic tale in which a young girl is put on a pedestal by a town who sees her as haughty and scornful. Miss Emily Grierson’s father controls her and her love life, pushing away all people until he dies and Emily is left alone. As her life goes on the townspeople watch her and judge Emily, almost turning her life into a spectacle to be talked about. At her death, a gruesome sight is unfolded when her lover of over forty years ago is found decomposed in her upstairs room. William Faulkner effectively builds epic suspense in “A Rose for Emily” by the unchronological order of the story, the treatment of Emily’s father towards her, and her family’s history of mental illness.
