The title’s girl on the train, Rachel Watson is the protagonist of the novel, who is an alcoholic and characterized to have possessed an overactive imagination. Although she has been fired from her job, Rachel still takes the trains to and from Euston every day, from where she is able to observe the Witney neighborhood and fantasizes about her past life. Her serious drinking issue causes her to be unable to remember what happens when she is drunk; therefore being skeptical whether she has done anything wrongful the night of Megan’s disappearance. Throughout the novel, we witness Rachel’s fight against her drinking problem to remain sober in order to solve Megan’s murder.
