Prompt: Evaluate the extent to which the growth of civil rights activism contributed to changes in government action from 1940-1965. The civil rights movement was an incredibly important time for the African American community, and much of the social change seen today can be attributed to the bravery of all those involved in the civil rights movement. The amassing of support for the civil rights movement as well as its increasing activism during and after World War II proved fruitful. It altered the government's treatment of the African American community by achieving legislative reform as well as beneficial judicial decisions.
The freedom riders were protesters who boycotted the city buses, they did this by buying tickets and staying on the buses for as long as possible by either reaching the “end of the line” or were kicked off to make room for white passengers. These boycotts slowed bus traffic to a near halt. This angered white passengers which led to the bus bombings of two full buses of blacks were bombed in the middle of the road. There was no police or fire interaction and the buses were just left there burning for hours with zero help. This was one of John Lewis’s darkest days, he was not on or near the buses at the time but when the news was heard he was with a group of people, the entire room went silent.
The 1960-70’s was the height of the Civil Rights Movement. African Americans were dedicated to gaining liberties which only whites could exercise freely, and did this was done through peaceful as well as violent means of protest. Individuals such as Martin Luther King protested by means of preaching peace and utilizing nonviolent actions against whites while others such as Malcolm x and elijah muhammad resorted to not only violence, yet separatism to protest and show their urge to gain civil Liberties. Though, both methods of protest were aimed towards the same goal, only one was to be influential and bring about the change that African Americans desire.
There were many changes that occurred in the 1960’s in specifically in the goals, strategies, and support of the movement for African American civil rights. While the movement started as peaceful, as the years went along,
Racial discrimination became a problem for African Americans throughout the 1960s. It commenced with the Jim Crow laws that promoted segregation for African Americans. Leading for African Americans to become segregated from public facilities and treated unfairly. At the time it was clear that in the eyes of Jim Crow and others who thought just like him, he saw those with black skin as unworthy and unequal compared to their white skin. Plessy fought to be “separate but equal” in their community.
On May 14th, the greyhound bus arrived and there were 200 white people waiting to attack the bus and the Freedom Riders. This caused the bus driver to not stop in the terminal, and continue straight with the mob of people were following the bus. As the bus continued, the cars of angry people followed, but the tires on the bus were wearing out. They busted, and the mob started attacking the bus. One man threw a bomb on the bus, and the people on the bus fortunately escaped.
The beatings and bombings, leaving riders “on the ground around the bus, coughing and bleeding” took place in the heart of the south, states such as Alabama, Louisiana, and their major cities. One of the most hard core attacks was one received once the freedom riders arrived to Montgomery, where they were met by a mob of more than 1,000 whites. Another attack took place right outside of Alabama in the city of Anniston, where white supremacists set one of the freedom riders buses on fire. The freedom riders then began to gain national support, along with support from one of the most renowned Civil Rights leaders MLK Jr., and president Robert F. Kennedy. Thesis From the mid 1910s to the early 1960s there were many riots that occured, because of racial tensions built up between the the whites and the blacks world wide. Coming from Will Brown being accused of rapping a young white girl, and to Eugene Williams having rocks thrown at him causing him to drown. Segregation at this time was unjustified due to racism still being heavily considered as the right thing to do. These riots caused the United States to be even more segregated, due to unequal rights and no laws being created at the time to help and protect African Americans. During these riots there were cases of police brutality and whites being able to do whatever they choose to do, because they felt as if it was a justified reason to stop the African Americans from rioting.
The Freedom Rides are a group of mix races ( AfricanAmerican and white), they traveled in bus going through American South to protest segregation. CORE (Congress Of Racial Equality) is the one who ask the Freedom Riders to go protest American South. The Riders only use “whitesonly” restrooms and lunch counters and white Riders would use “coloredonly” restrooms and lunch counters. This led to violence against white protester this cause nationwide attention.

African Americans decided it was time to take a stand and change the way that they were treated just because of their skin color.
