Racial Stereotypes in Sports
Nearly every sports team features players from different races and backgrounds: Asians, African Americans, Mexicans, and Whites. Based on these differences stereotypes have been made based on the sport they play. Many people believe that a player’s race tells their strengths and weaknesses. If we take a look at the professional teams, for example, the National Football League (NFL), we are most likely able to identify African American players than whites. Many people assume this is because African American people are naturally strong and are capable of taking hard hits compared to white people due to the fact that football is a very violent sport that requires lots of strength and agility. These positions are commonly associated with requiring intelligence and quick decision-making. On the other hand, African-Americans are often pushed to play positions like running back, wide receiver, and defensive back in football, because these positions are commonly thought of as reactionary positions, and requiring greater athleticism (Racial Stacking in Sports).
These types of stereotypes are not only towards African Americans and Whites but others races as well. It is just more commonly to happen between these two types of races since it is what we mostly have here in the United States. Baseball is a sport that requires lots of strategies and quick decision making as the ball travels about as fast as a car on a highway. In order for players to keep up with the game ball so they won’t get score, they are required to make lots of critical decisions. In other words, in A Black and White Game: Racial Stereotypes in Baseball, Patrick Ferrucci, et al. talks about their own statistics after performing an evaluation on both races. Their results consist of, “Black Players were rated significantly higher in physical strength and natural ability, […] White players were not rated significantly higher in intelligence and leadership,” (Patrick Ferrucci, et al).
