Question 1: The south during the time period of 1877-1920 was not characterized by racial equality. This time period was the redemption period where white southerners looked to regain control and to demote the African-American southerners to second-class citizenship. After the reconstruction period ended, the Freedman’s Bureau and the Union troops left the south. This led to the beginning of the Jim Crow laws.
Local and state governments enacted laws that mandated separation between Blacks and Whites. Such separateness was almost always unequal, despite the Supreme Court’s 1896 “separate but equal” ruling in Plessy vs. Ferguson. Blacks were confined to substandard bathrooms, parks, water fountains, restaurants, schools, and hospitals. They generally received a poor education, which hindered their ability to advance. White Southerners subjugated African-Americans whose work options were limited and whose pay lagged behind that of Whites.
In the 19th Century, “Antebellum” era America, citizens were witnessing America go through a radical metamorphosis. The country had gone from an agricultural empire to an industrial beast, seemingly overnight. To compensate for these great changes and difficulties, many idealists forged plethoras of reformation movements. One of these being, the Second Great Awakening. Two of the issues the Second Great Awakening brought light upon were Temperance (alcoholism), and the ever capsulating issue of racism.
The ruling thus lent high judicial support to racial and ethnic discrimination and led to wider spread of the segregation between Whites and Blacks in the Southern United States. The great oppressive consequence from this was discrimination against African American minority from the socio-political opportunity to share the same facilities with the mainstream Whites, which in most of the cases the separate facilities for African Americans were inferior to those for Whites in actuality. The doctrine of “separate but equal” hence encourages two-tiered pluralism in U.S. as it privileged the non-Hispanic Whites over other racial and ethnic minority
Racism in 1880 During the years 1870 through 1900, racism vastly continued across the United States. African Americans and Native Americans were treated brutally by white men; from being pushed off their land and having their homes taken away from them, to make room for white families or workers, to being brutally murdered by soldiers or hate groups. Whites controlled virtually everything including businesses, the railroads, farms, and most of the government. Once the African Americans were freed, many had hopes to become self-sufficient farmers like the white citizens around them.
Breaking Social Boundaries The era of the 1920s was a pinnacle time in American History and the literature that was produced from this era showcases the social change happening. This was the time of social upheaval where the people were challenging social boundaries. The values that had been sought after in the period before this were becoming less and else prevalent in the new society. There are many viewpoints of this time period so the literature of this time was very diverse and many works showed the changing cultures.

Both of these articles argue that when the United States was in a time of peril, they used racism as a unifying factor to bring the country together and as a way to put a group of people lower than themselves to bring their status to a higher point in society.
The 1920s carried much change in society. Some of these changes were more rights for women, jazz music, and prohibition. The people of the 1920s were disillusioned by society lacking in idealism and vision, sense of personal alienation, and Americans were obsessed with materialism and outmoded moral values (The Roaring Twenties).Cultural changes were strongly influenced by the destruction of World War I ending 1918. America needed to recover and with it youth rebelled against the norms of the older generations.
The 1920's was both the best and the worst period in America. Business was soaring and the production of automobiles increased. Women, also, wore new fashions that rebelled against the classic [insert]. Additionally, new Jazz music along with books, movies, and radio stations were evolving. Despite this, however, there were some grim groups and activities taking place.
The 1920’s was an interesting time in American history. This era was also known as the roaring twenties. Although it is remembered as a fond time before the Great Depression there was also a lot of conflicts arising, Cultural conflicts in particular were at the center. Prohibition and Immigration were two of the main cultural conflicts during this time period.
Around the 19th century this was a period of time which basically the start of the modern civilization occurred. This period of advancement came with a lot of issues with the civilization that has not yet matured to understand modern thoughts such as anti-racism and civil right and this will be discussed. The emergence of racialized thinking during the enlightenment era, the racialized thinking practice in nineteenth century European and US colonies, as well as the rise of racial and biological nationalism in early twentieth century Europe will be discussed. The era of the enlightenment introduced numerous new concepts and more modernized thought to society.
There is a historical racism that is ingrained in the country and is in the subconscious of the American people. It is what has been referred to as uber discrimination (Reskins.) In this paper I will talk about the extensive history of racism in America while explaining the origins and current use of the systems and structures currently in place. While this paper does give extensive history it will only talk about systems. This paper explains many events but, due to sheer volume will not be able to address all historical points, especially pertaining to micro aggressions, and personal racism (using slurs and offensive language.)
According to the wise words of James Baldwin, “the nature of society is to create, among its citizens, an illusion of safety; but it is also absolutely true that the safety is always necessarily an illusion.” He also claims that “artists are here to disturb the peace,” and the writers of the modernist era truly embody Baldwin’s expectations. (cite quote) The primary goal of the modernist movement was to invalidate the conventions that governed society because the writers believed such conventions were simply “arbitrary and fragile human constructions” (Loeffelholz 14). They did not avoid topics deemed deviant by society, for they perceived the concept of deviance itself to be subjective and simply a method used for stigmatization and control.
Racism is considered to be one of the most important and difficult topics to be spoken about all over the world. It has become a major problem for the nation during the years. In my essay I would like to speak about the beginning of racism, the situation nowadays, about the Civil Rights Movement and of course about a person, who had the greatest influence on the problem of racism in the history – Martin Luther King. First of all, it is important to understand what racism actually is.
