The film “Radio” written by Mike Rich and directed by Michael Tollin is based in a racially divided town and inspired by the true story of James Robert "Radio" Kennedy. Released in 2003 and distributed by Sony. This film features a black boy who has a mental illness and inherited the nickname Radio from his extensive collection of radios. This film highlights the discrimination against people with mental illnesses. While also highlighting how those with illnesses can do the same as everyone else. The main characters Radio played by actor Cuba Gooding Jr. and Coach Jones played by Ed Harris portray a strong friendship that shows the importance of giving people chances, no matter their circumstances. After an altercation with the football player, Coach took an interest in Radio and invited him to practice. As time goes on and Radio becomes more involved with the team, he befriends many people in the community. Showing his kindness and enthusiasm, his presence positively impacts the people around him. He does this despite facing prejudice and misunderstanding because of his mental illness. Even though he gets close to some, not all the townspeople take a liking to him. One person in particular believes that Radio is a distraction, and continuously tries to get Radio away from the school and Coach Jones. But because of the strong bond between the coach and Raio, Jones is always there to prevent that. Their friendship serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration, ultimately uniting the town and fostering a sense of unity and compassion among its residents. A personal tragedy Radio faces tests how strong this friendship is though. But in the end, like always, the friendship still flourishes. While watching this film, I would say my experience was joyous. I say this because even though the storyline has its ups and downs, it always ends up on an
