6. I believe Rainsford is guilty of murder because he wasn’t self-defending himself. In the story, Zaroff says “I congratulate you, you have won the game” after he finds Rainsford hiding in his room, which meant Rainsford could have left safely with no issues as the general had said earlier. But instead, Rainsford decided to murder the general. There was no self-defense, Zaroff wasn’t threatening Rainsford. He had held Rainsford against his will earlier but now the hunt was over and he was free to go. Rainsford was off the hook. But Rainsford insisted on fighting to the death. In Conclusion, I think Rainsford is guilty of murder.

10. General Zaroff is a gentleman in many ways. First of all, he talk with respect. In most of the story, Zaroff is calm. He speaks with a very gentle tone. For example, when they are eating Zaroff says, “We will have some capital hunting you and I”. Most people would have said “You and me will have some great hunting”. General Zaroff chooses his words wisely. Another reason General Zaroff I a gentleman is because he treats his guests with respect. In the story, Zaroff welcomes Rainsford to his house, lets Rainsford have his clothes, dine with him, and sleep in his house with no cost at all. He respects Rainsford and talks to him very gentle. In the story, Rainsford calls himself a cat because he is stealthy and smart. He covers his path and slowly climbs the tree leaving no trail. Rainsford says “I have played the fox, now I must play cat of the fable”, but later in the story, Zaroff finds Rainsford, but doesn’t kill him. Then the author says “the Cossack was the mouse, he was the mouse”. Cats like to play with their prey before they kill them. That is why Rainsford felt like a mouse. Zaroff was playing with Rainsford before he killed him. I think Rainsford would rather be the cat because the cat doesn’t fear the mouse.
