Raise Awareness In To Kill A Mockingbird

Over the years raising awareness has helped many causes in a great deal. You can raise awareness in many ways. One of those ways is through the use of literature. The book To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and the poem Even Weeds Have Needs by lindamichellebaron are great examples of literature that raised awareness. To Kill a Mockingbird is about a white family living in Alabama that witnesses mistreatment of blacks and injustices.The poem Even Weeds Have Needs is a metaphor about how everyone has needs and that they need to be given a chance. Although Even Weeds Have Needs uses symbolism and To Kill a Mockingbird uses possible, real life examples they both raised awareness for black rights by addressing similar topics. One way that Even Weeds Have Needs and To Kill a Mockingbird raised awareness was by addressing and showing the fact that racism does not only impact blacks social

For example Even Weeds Have Needs uses a gardener to symbolize someone sticking up for blacks, like Atticus, saying that “This weed needs a great big garden with a gardener who’s not afraid to let me grow” (lindamichellebaron). Meaning that people have to give blacks a chance and not to be afraid if their perspective of blacks were wrong.The novel addressed this topic by making Atticus defend Tom Robinson. In the novel the case showed that standing up for a black person could make a difference. It showed this because as a result of Atticus defended Tom and standing up for him, Atticus caused change. He did this by making the jury think resulting in the jury taking “ So long” on Tom’s case decision (Lee 276).
