Sex Ethics What exactly is casual sex and how is it different from a sexual relationship? The one article that I will be going over is Raja Halwani’s casual sex promiscuity. How exactly does Utilitarianism use pleasure/happiness to play its part in sex ethics? The issue within Sex Ethics is what factors make sex moral and immoral. Overall what are my views on casual sex is it moral or immorally wrong. By using the dictionary casual sex is defined as “types of sexual acts outside the context of a romantic relationship which includes one night stands, promiscuity, or to have sex in the absence of emotional attachment or love.” Or one could call it one-night stands. They also say that consenting adults can do whatever they want as long as it is “the greatest happiness for the greatest number.” This logic applies as long as there is no harm done to others or society. They also believe that sex before marriage could cause some problems. Utilitarian’s believe that the person you have casual sex with could have a disease or end up getting pregnant with someone that you do not wish to have a child with. Sometimes it is also possible that sex outside marriage could also be falsely consented. With the statement of sex outside marriage is present the “greatest happiness for the greatest number” does not apply because those being cheated on would be upset. Utilitarianism usually weighs out the pain and pleasure, why? Because adultery causes short term pleasure but ends up not being worth it because the overall pain and misery that they can cause, example: divorce, breakup. It is kind of odd but Utilitarianism is tolerant of nontraditional sexual orientations like if a marrying and wanting to have sex with more than one person is what they want to do then it is considered acceptable. When it comes to contraception’s utilitarianisms don’t really specifically mention the use which pretty much suggests that they do not have a problem with it, if both parties are aware and do not have a problem with the usage then it is acceptable to use. Contraception’s can bring many benefits to society which can cause a greater happiness. Homosexuality also plays a part in this also since Utilitarian’s believe that if being homosexual gives someone the most pleasure and makes them happier, then it is supported by the whole “human happiness”.
