The book is about Ramona, an eight-year old who wants to show that she is old enough to take care of herself. She narrates her school life experience as a grade 3 student in a new school and her family concern. Since Ramona’s dad lost his job and wants to go to school to become an art teacher, her mom must go to work (2 jobs) to keep up with the family’s finances. This concerns her, since Ramona sees and feels the family stressing about money. Meanwhile, in school, she has a new teacher, Mrs. Whaley, whom she wants to please and to show she is a good student. Yet, as the days go by, Ramona feels like she is being a pest to the teacher, especially the incident when she cracked a raw egg, which her mom accidentally gave for lunch instead of hardboiled egg. Ramon validated her thoughts when she heard the teacher saying she was a nuisance after the incident. Also, Ramona met a boy he named “Bigfoot”, whom he dislikes and fights him, but eventually she became friends with him. Besides those two worries, Howie, a neighbor of Ramona offers to give money if she babysits his younger sister, Willie Jean. Yet, Ramona gets stressed on how the grandmother of her neighbor blames her when Willa Jean acts out inappropriately.
