There have been many great pharaohs in Egyptian history, but one of the most famous pharaohs is Ramses II. Ramses achieved many things throughout his reign over Egypt, which is why he is a very famous pharaoh. Ramses II ruled Egypt from 1279 to 1213 B.C. He was the third king of the 19th dynasty, during the New Kingdom. Unfortunately, Ramses’s birthdate is unknown, but we do know he lived to about 96 years old. Ramses was the son of Seti I and Queen Tuya. Seti ruled Egypt from 1290-1279 B.C. When Ramses was young, he often went with his father on military operations. Ramses had over 200 wives and over 100 children. He outlived most of them. Two of his children were Khaemweset and Amunhirwenemef (Ramesses II). His favorite wife was Nefertari (History Alive 84). Many historians consider Ramses’s reign the pinnacle of Egyptian art(“Ramesses II”). Ramses’s reign has become controversial. Some people say that he was more of a fraud than a good king, but evidence shows that Egypt prospered under his reign(“Ramesses II”). During his reign, Ramses secured borders, increased Egypt’s wealth, and improved trading. He lived long enough to participate in two Heb Sed festivals, which only arrive every 30 years. Ramses’s mummy shows that he was over six feet tall, had a strong jaw, thin nose, and thick lips. His mummy also shows that he suffered from dental issues, arthritis, hardening arteries, and most likely passed away from old age or heart problems (Ramesses II). Egyptians later knew Ramses II as the ‘Great Ancestor’ and other pharaohs took his name as their own to honor him. Some people think there were better rulers than he, but none could ever live up to the grand achievements and glory of Ramses the Great (“Ramesses II”).
