He is no doubt one of the most menacing and vicious of them all. From being an unreliable and mischievous horse and cattle thief at the age of 12, to becoming prime police suspect and vicious and violent assaulter, which resulted in him being sentenced to 3 years, hard labour in prison. He then attempted to murder Constable Fitzpatrick by threatening to blow his brains out. This led to his mother, and many other people suspected of accommodating him, being arrested. This was the starting point of his horrific journey towards becoming a hated, evil bushranger. The police dispatched police search party to find him. Constable Lonigan, Sergeant Kennedy, Constable Scanlon, and Constable McIntyre made up this group. During the search, 3 of them were shot dead by the Kelly Gang and McIntyre narrowly escaped. One of these policemen Sergeant Kennedy. After Ned’s capture, he was thoroughly interrogated and he claimed that he killed him as “An act of mercy” (pg 52) while the dying, defenceless man was laid by his side. The fact that, before killing the half-dead policeman, Ned had callously tortured and broken the policeman’s soul before killing him. How could you possibly believe that this savage man, is a hero? How is it fair if the police were just doing their job, and instead, they’ve been sadistically brutalised. The poor victims of this disastrous affair left 2 women widows and 9 children fatherless.
