Denis Panteleev Prof. ART 250 4 May 2015 Paul Rand Paul Rand was born 15 of August, 1914 in Brooklyn, New York City, USA. He grew up in an orthodox Jewish family. Originally his name was Peretz Rosenbaum. Later he changed his name to Paul Rand as it could help him in his future career. Also, his new name could work as a symbol or a logotype, as both his first name and family name were of four letters. Paul Rand started to practice design in his early years, creating signs for his father's store. His father did not think that design can help Paul to make enough money to live, so Paul was forced to study at Manhattan's Harren School while attending night courses at the Pratt Institute. While working and studying he created an imposing portfolio, which was inspired by German poster design style Sachplakat. He was rapidly growing as a designer. In his 20s, his works started to attract international attention. His covers of the Direction magazine can serve as an example of his artwork of he period. It is interesting that he continued to grow as a designer and his reputation increased year-by-year. He became a very important man in his profession, influencing the whole design world. Generally, Paul Rand was famous for designing logotypes during 1950s-60s. Also, the another source of his reputation was his page design. In 1930s he got job creating the page layouts in Apparel Arts magazine. He was talented in using photographs for creating interesting compositions, which helped the magazine pages to receive a solid look of a strong design. Later, at the age of just twenty-three he got the job as art director in Esquire magazine. Paul Rand is also known as a great professor.
