Ayn Rand
Ayn Rand was born February 2, 1905 in St. Petersburg, Russia. Her real name is Alissa Zinov’yevna Rosenbaum. She changed her name to Ayn Rand after she arrived in America to protect her family.
Her dad was Zinovy Rosenbaum, also known as Fronz. Her dad owned a pharmacy. Her mom was Anna Rosenbaum. Ayn’s mother saw herself as a smart person and liked to host parties and dinners. Ayn Rand had two younger sisters, Natalia known as Natasha and Eleanora known as Nora.
Ayn taught herself to read at age six. She wasn’t interested in the Russian fairy tales both her sisters liked so her mother subscribed to a boys’ magazine. Ayn wanted to be like the hero in those magazines. When her mother took her to see a movie, she would love to see the New York skyline. The family moved to Crimea to escape the civil war. Ayn graduated high school in 1921. Afterward, the family returned to Petrograd in hopes of regaining the business. Ayn enrolled in Leningrad State University as a history major. In the fall of 1924, she enrolled in a school for screenwriters.
Life was not good under the communist government. The family went hungry and suffered from disease. Ayn saw life in Russia as hopeless and tragic. She felt like she would die if she did not leave Russia. She saw life in America as hopeful and bright because living in America would give her the freedom to write about about anything she wanted.
Her mother wanted Ayn to go to America so she could complete her life goal of becoming a writer. Ayn’s mother contacted relatives in Chicago and sold jewelry to get a cabin on a boat to America. Ayn was given a six month visa, but she knew that she was never coming back to Russia. Ayn took a train through Europe. She sailed from France and arrived in Manhattan on February
