Based on a man named Equality 7-2521, Anthem, written by Ayn Rand, tells his story as a captive. He was not ordinary like everyone else but was very different in many aspects. He was said to be cursed due to his great height, his intelligence, and his forever wandering mind. Equality 7-2521 was smarter than the other students he learned with. According to the Councils over the captives, everyone should be one or in unity. Therefore, it was seen as a great sin for Equality 7-2521 to be wiser or smarter than his brothers. He would ponder and try to figure it out, but never understood the logic behind the Council’s view of good and evil. This person was named Liberty 5-3000. To Equality 7-2521, she was so beautiful to him that he decided to give her a name that only he called her. The name was Golden One, because of her hair that was as golden as the sun, and blew in the wind. Even though Equality 7-2521 found a new friend he still did not tell anyone about his tunnel. In his tunnel, he loses the feeling of fear and gains strength. Equality 7-2521 reflects back on a time where it was purposed for fear to be embedded in him. A transgressor was shackled and whipped in front of his brothers and burned to death only to be smiling in the midst of the flames. That event stuck with Equality 7-2521 because it seemed as if the transgressor was attempting to tell him something by the look in the transgressor’s eyes. When he tried to sneak back to where he was supposed to be, it was too late. The Council questioned, lashed, and beat him trying to find out where he had been. Nevertheless, he never told. Through the lashing and beating Equality 7-2521 withstood the physical torture to protect his discovery. After being there for so long, he knew that he had to escape. For his brilliance and effortless intelligence, it was easy for him to escape the prison he was in. Once he escaped, he immediately began to plan how he would get his light to the World Council (since the next day they would be in that city). Equality 7-2521 was able to get his box and himself to the World Council with no problem since the news about his escape was not out, and no one was looking for him yet. He presented his discovery to them with confidence. Nevertheless, the World Council saw it as a great transgression for a Street Sweeper to want to do anything besides what he was appointed to do. They wanted Equality 7-2521 lashed and burned because of his evil works. Completely disagreeing with the verdict of the Council, he ran away with his light until he ended up in the Uncharted Forest. He walked and stayed there lonely until he saw the Golden One. She had followed him and planned to stay with him, in which she did survive with him in the forest.
