In Anthem, by Ayn Rand, what was the Council of Vocations thinking when they made Equality 7-2521 a Street Sweeper? The Council of Vocations chose Equality 7-2521 to be a Street Sweeper, there are some reasons that could explain why. They do not want him to be in a place of power because they know he is smart, he broke a lot of laws while in school, and to teach him a lesson to make him just like his brothers. Did the Council of Vocations make Equality 7-2521 a Street Sweeper to keep him away from power? Equality 7-2521 was very smart, so much so that he was punished for not being equal to his brothers. On the day that he is assigned his job he wanted to be a scholar so he could go and study science and the earth. However, they make him a Street Sweeper. "This is a great sin, to be born with a head which is too quick. It is not good to be different from our brothers, but it is evil to be superior to them." (21). This shows that Equality 7-2521 was smarter then his brothers, and it is evil to do so. So from that the Council of Vocations knows that Equality 7-2521 can not be trusted in a place of power because he will want to find out more and change the whole society. A Street Sweeper is the lowest position in this society that Equality 7-2521 lives in. The house is gray, clay cups, and they have to sweep the streets for ten hours a day. They also have barely any free time, and most of it is spent in the town square watching a play or something similar. "We knew we had been guilty" (26).
