On March 24, 1998 at Westside Middle School in Jonesboro, Arkansas a tragic event took place. Two kids were convicted of killing four students, one teacher, and injuring 10 other students. These kids were of the age 11 and 13-year-old. The 13-year-old young men was named Mitchell Johnson. Mitchell was known a young respectful kid by his seventh grade teacher. Two months before this tragic event, Mitchell had recently started to listen to rap music with artist like Tupac Shakur. He, himself, confessed that he listened to this music daily everywhere and he felt it was influencing his life. Debbie Pelley, a teacher from Westside Middle School, and a young 12-year-old who knew Mitchell went thru the songs he listens to and thru the lyrics found how it did change Mitchell. A tragedy that took five lives of loved ones do to a style of music. A style of music that causes teens like Mitchell to change and rebel. Rap Music can cause many negative rebellions on teens by promoting aggressive behavior, sex, and addictions. Todays Rap music is based on more severe life …show more content…

Teens see artist as role models, people they want to be when they grow up. In many cases, those role models teen have been not the correct ones, especially in the rap industry. Many rappers are known for doing drugs and drinking alcohol. As teen see this they want to be like them and many get influence. In other cases, teens get influenced by lyrics. There are songs like Blame it or Day ‘n’ Night that talk about drugs and alcohol. These songs could be heard anywhere, on TV or a radio or a phone. “A total of 31 percent of the songs on the airplay charts referenced drugs or alcohol (Knoploh 27).” This means that there is a high chance a teen can hear these songs. Teens who hear these type of songs are more likely to end up doing this. In today’s society kids care about being popular and if a song says “blame it on the vodka”, that is what they will
