Literary Analysis Final of “Raymond’s Run” Professional American basketball player Kevin Durant once said, "hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard.” Through a short story, Raymond's Run covers a few days in the life of Squeaky, a young girl who's job is to take care of her older brother Raymond who has disabilities. Squeaky likes to run and she is good at it. She wants to win every track meet, but Gretchen, Squeaky’s enemy, is getting in the way. So Squeaky works hard to beat Gretchen. Then Squeaky wins the race and both girls respect each other. Raymond's Run by Toni Cade Bambara explains that if one has confidence in themselves and has diligence they can accomplish anything. The theme of confidence and diligence first appears in Raymond’s run when Squeaky is talking about how good of a runner she is. First, in “Raymond’s Run” Squeaky lists the races she has run in and won. For instance, Squeaky says, "there is no track me that I don't win the first-place medal. I used to win the twenty-yard dash when I was a little kid in kindergarten."
