The availability of books gets vaster over time. You can get books anywhere and at any time. The real concern is what we do with reading. Do we read for fun? Do we read to learn? Is there even a point in reading if we aren’t learning anything? In the Article “Reading and Thought” by Dwight MacDonald, the author talks about the usage of common readings in our lives and how that affects our way of thinking. MacDonald believes that readings that are too informative are challenging to read and have a thought about. There are more ways of reading now, such as online, which makes it easier to get distracted. The web has created laziness when it comes to reading a physical book. The web created the idea of not needing to read to learn because you can just search it up. Reading a book without having the time to do it is the reason why people choose the web. Over generations, reading has become a less common thing to do. In the Article “Is Google Making Us Stupid”? What The Internet Is Doing To Our Brains” by Nicolas Carr, Carr explains through research how the web has affected the way our brain functions. One of the biggest concerns of the web is our attention span has shortened. One of the projects he had was research with one of the faculty members of the University of Michigan Medical School. The faculty member admitted he couldn’t read as much as before, after a few pages he would start skimming through even if it was online (WI pg 578). This proves that the internet has not just affected the way we read, but it has also affected our minds, which includes our thinking. Nowadays, we mostly think of quicker ways we can do things. Since our attention span is much shorter, we tend to do multiple things because we lose distraction much quicker. Reading to me is very difficult when it has many facts about different things, I lose track of what I’ve read and just end up confused without remembering what I’ve spent time reading on. To be able to read I have to completely clear my head and be open-minded. While reading, I always try to think the way the characters or the author do. It makes me feel like I’m in their shoes. Having an open mind while reading gives you a different experience; it makes you escape from reality and can over time change the way you think. Thinking roughly while reading makes you view life differently. You can read a book about love and have different expectations for it afterwards. I wasn’t always a big reader until I was able to connect with one of my books. I read until I felt part of the book. I used the experiences of the books to help me understand my life. Being able to understand others through reading can help you understand your life. Books are the way you can freely think about life and solve problems. The connection with the way you read and think is the key to understanding the ideas you get from the reading. Reading is helpful in understanding life in different ways. When reading you have to make sure to carefully go through the reading and make connections, with those connections you have ideas that complete the thoughts in your head. Reading and thinking make you learn valuable things, which is why it’s important to
