Short stories such as “Ashes” by Susan Pfeffer and “Abuela Invents the Zero” by Judith Ortiz Cofer use literary elements to help progress the story. “Ashes” is a story about a young girl named Ashes who is forced to choose between her two divorced parents. “Abuela Invents the Zero” is about a teenager who doesn’t want to be associated with her grandma, and therefore makes her feel worthless. The elements of literature such as POV, conflict, and symbols allows the reader to get engaged with the story.

During the reading of chapter 1 by Brenda Combs I became tearful with her story of how the circumstances in her life changed by imploring help from the Lord to heal her from her addictions and homelessness. After she took her decision of staying positive, and setting up goals, and with determination that she and her son deserved more than a simple paycheck. Those thoughts were her inspiration for improvement, and working very hard in her dreams without giving up. In the book How to Read Literature like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster, the first chapter illustrates the elements and ideas of quests in literature. Foster starts off the chapter with a hypothetical story where an average sixteen year old boy named Kip goes to the A&P, a local super market, to buy a loaf of Wonder Bread. Along the way, Kip unpleasantly encounters a German shepherd but meets Karen, the girl of his dreams, laughing with Tony Vauxhall in his ‘68’ Cuba. Kip continues to search for the bread in the store, but he is disturbed by a marine asking him to join the Navy. The story is immediately paused, and Foster analytically explains how Kip’s trip to the A&P was actually a quest.

This strategic choice utilized the “childish elements” of young literature, such as the, “wicked witch,” to convey underlying messages of fear and racism. In Thomas Foster’s, “How to Read Literature like a Professor,” the strategy of “stealing” ideas and elements from four main literary sources, children’s literature included, was discussed. Gordimer pulled from these stories, shown explicitly in the title, to create irony by conveying modern, political ideas and issues in our society through “innocent” plot elements.

Being the vast genre that it is, fiction presents writers with the opportunity to utilize literary devices in their pieces. These devices help in communicating the message of the author’s work. Several fictional texts use common literary devices such as metaphors, similes, symbols, and imagery. These devices allow for writers to personally involve readers with the author’s message.
Rationale: For this task, I created a diary because I think that this style of writing would be an extremely effective way to show another major character’s emotions and ideas, as it can be written from a first person perspective, giving a huge amount of insight. I based my task on a short story by Edgar Allen Poe, titled “The Tell-Tale Heart.” I chose this piece as it gives the opportunity to be very creative in my writing, but also introduces various constraints, such as writing in a similar style to Poe, and trying to avoid any plot holes. This task specifically relates to part 4 of the language and literature course, being; literature, as the stimulus text is a piece of literature, as is my piece of writing.
