Slater begins the chapter talking about David Rosenhan’s personal experience being a diagnostic question himself after he lost his mind, legs, arms, torso, lungs and his family. He was working on dismantling psychiatric diagnosis. He did an experiment where he had asked eight of his friends if they would be willing to walk into a mental hospital and pretend to be real mental patients. They were instructed to say that they were hearing voices; and the voice was to say “thud”. Once they were admitted, they were instructed to say that they were feeling much better and that the voices had passed.
Reading may seem like an run of the mill thing where you laugh at the funny jokes, glare into the abyss when the text possess a provocative quote. To Mike Bunn the author of “How to Read Like A Writer,” has a different interpretation of what reading should be. Mike Bunn emphasizes that reading should be more than just context, he argues that you need to question the authors’ choice of words, literary devices, sentence placement, in order to be able to become better readers and writers ourselfs. He presents it to the audience in a manner that is very interactive. He begins by explaining what he means to “Read Like a Writer”(Bunn, How to Read Like A Writer), followed by questions that should be asked about the text and writing style, and techniques that should be done to become a more proficient writer.
Think Like a Freak “What’s Your Problem?” Jayla Helton ECON 202 Summary In this chapter, one will learn that we tend to pay more attention to what others think of us, rather than what we think of ourselves.
1. Copy a short passage that you found to be interesting and explain why you found it interesting/why it is an example of good writing. “If evenings at the fair were seductive, the nights were ravishing. The lamps that laced every building and walkway produced the most elaborate demonstration of illumination ever attempted and the first large-scale test of alternating current.
In the book How to Read Literature like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster, the first chapter illustrates the elements and ideas of quests in literature. Foster starts off the chapter with a hypothetical story where an average sixteen year old boy named Kip goes to the A&P, a local super market, to buy a loaf of Wonder Bread. Along the way, Kip unpleasantly encounters a German shepherd but meets Karen, the girl of his dreams, laughing with Tony Vauxhall in his ‘68’ Cuba. Kip continues to search for the bread in the store, but he is disturbed by a marine asking him to join the Navy. The story is immediately paused, and Foster analytically explains how Kip’s trip to the A&P was actually a quest.
Readers learn how to get started when writing because Lamott included examples of how she gets started writing in her article. An example being “So I’d start writing without reining myself in. It was almost just typing, just making my fingers move.” Although this way to get started may be an anecdote, readers may take this tip and adopt it as part of their writing process. Lamott included tips on how she writes as a result Lamott was able to give writers practical methods to get over writer’s block.
We aren’t taught to just begin a task without an exact goal in mind. But this method can sometimes lead to the discovery of an even greater reward. In today’s society, we as writers are trained from an early age to reach a set objective by any means necessary. But when looking back on this concept, aren’t we missing the whole point of completing the assignment in the first place? In this paper, I will adopt this notion of starting a piece of writing without a specific end result in mind, in the hopes of discovering myself as a writer and developing a powerful paper in the process.
In the article The Qualities of Good Writing by Jacqueline Berke, Berke explains qualities a writer must know to provide a good quality writing. She begins with the idea that when writing, it is better to be concise and to the point than have lengthy paragraphs. Berke emphasizes that in order to provide the best quality writing there are three qualities the paper must have to be considered good. The first quality is economy. This means the writer should never include unnecessary sentences and unnecessary words in a paragraph.
Basic ‘Connections’ paragraphs: 1. Connection 2. Text #1 example/s (include quotes / film techniques) 3. Analysis of text #1 example/s 4. Linking phrase to introduce next text 5.
This chapter can help young writers in English class with their papers in many different ways. For instance, Trimble gives examples on what a veteran writer does in order to make their writing interesting. He also gives out techniques on how you can get a reader’s attention or how you can fix your writing to make it readable instead of having nonsense. What makes this difficult for me as a writer is that I write what ever comes to my mind and it will not make sense. Another thing that makes it difficult for me as a writer is that I am not good at getting the readers attention and having him hooked on to my work.
Paragraph ends with a well-written concluding sentence that clearly synthesizes the ideas of the paragraph. Progression of ideas is natural, logical and well-controlled. Cds and Cms are clearly and thoughtfully tied together. Meaningful transitions and strong sentence-to-sentence connections enhance the flow of the paragraph by clearly and cleverly showing the relationships among ideas, making the writer’s train of thought easy to follow. Student is able to free themselves from the writing format and create an original work (when applicable).
World War I was the result of internal conflict in Germany. In the decades leading up to the war there was many instances of disregarding political opinions that did not follow conservative ideals that Bismarck believed. From the beginning of united Germany it was done with political manipulation and careful orchestrating of a war that would bring about the desired outcome of a united Germany. The governmental system that ran the united Germany was completely biased against any decision that Bismarck or Prussia did not approve. The class conflict was attempted to be resolved with providing jobs and potentially increasing the wealth of the country, but it did the opposite.
Identify three writing principles from this chapter that you most need to work on. For each principle, write a paragraph about why you want to improve in this area and how you will go about doing it. Choose from the following writing principles: be specific; be accurate; control paragraph length; use short sentences in most cases; avoid redundancy; avoid empty phrases; use action verbs when possible; use active voice; use short and familiar words and phrases; avoid buzzwords and figures of
I start off well with the introduction then by the third paragraph my mind is blank. Funny thing is I have a lot of ideas that I could type but just can’t express them when it’s time to write.
Also not leaving people wondering about what is happening makes a good piece of writing. I know when I have written something well, when I feel very confident in it. As I’m reading through it, I want to keep reading it. Also when I don’t feel the need to go back and add more words or details because I already had. That is how I know when I have written my best.
