In the article The Qualities of Good Writing by Jacqueline Berke, Berke explains qualities a writer must know to provide a good quality writing. She begins with the idea that when writing, it is better to be concise and to the point than have lengthy paragraphs. Berke emphasizes that in order to provide the best quality writing there are three qualities the paper must have to be considered good. The first quality is economy. This means the writer should never include unnecessary sentences and unnecessary words in a paragraph. Writing should be effective and satisfying. Another quality of good writing is simplicity. However, this does not mean to make writing as simple and plain as possible, but it means to make sure as to avoid exaggeration in writing. Finally, the last quality for of good writing is clarity. She points out that when writing, the writer should always be aware of the reader, and make sure they are able to understand what the point the writer is trying to make. Berke always emphasizes the idea that writing should be understandable, informative, and appealing to all readers. Berke establishes her argument by rhetorical questions and logos.
