Medea Synthesis Debate Essay
The novel Medea, written by Euripides, is a controversial and argumentative story about a woman exacting revenge on her former lover. The main character, Medea, has recently been cheated on by her former ex-husband, Jason. He pledges to marry the Princess from the nation that they live in, Corinth, without Medea’s knowledge. Once Medea becomes aware of Jason’s affair, she expresses her desire to get revenge through her emotions and actions. Medea conjures a murderous plan in order to take revenge against Jason. Through Medea’s plan, she refers to the patriarchal issues of Corinth and the injustices that women suffer in society. Medea’s reference to these problems may seem to give reason to her evil actions, but in reality Medea acts illogically in consideration to the women of Corinth. Medea speaks to the Chorus about this subject, “Of all things which are living and can form a judgment/ We women are the most unfortunate creatures” (Euripides 8). Medea is not only responding to the injustices within Corinth, but also to Jason’s affair. The description of women being “unfortunate creatures” identifies the concern that Medea is using to further justify her actions. The hyperbole of “most unfortunate” exaggerates the societal problems in Corinth allowing Medea to use it as a logical argument, which further justifies her response to them. Medea’s appeal to logos recognizes these issues, although her actions served no benefit to anyone but herself. Her logical appeal allows Medea to use the injustices of the women of Corinth to victimize herself, which she then utilizes to account for her own actions. Although Medea speaks in consideration to the women of Corinth, her later actions were only benefiting herself. Later in the play, Medea speaks to Jason about her recent actions,“The children are dead. I say this to make you suffer” …show more content…

Meaningful transitions and strong sentence-to-sentence connections enhance the flow of the paragraph by clearly and cleverly showing the relationships among ideas, making the writer’s train of thought easy to follow.
