The bloodiest battle of the Civil War is explained through the eyes of the leaders of Union and Confederates in a way that is breathtaking and exhilarating. Even though South was determined and bold; The North was able to wear the confederates down because of their leaders who had a strategic plan and clear concept of war to take in prisoners and win for the sake of freedom. The 2017 documentary Whose Streets directed by Sabaah Folayan and Damon Davis was a critical piece that demonstrated the beginning of the Black Lives Matter movement and the pervasive issue of police brutality in the United States. The film depicts the 2014 Ferguson protests following the killing of 18-year-old Michael Brown by a police officer. This film was unique because it highlighted an issue that was nationally contentious and emphasized the voices of the black community in Ferguson who were protesting against this injustice. Much of the media coverage during this time misconstrued the protests, referring to the event as “riots” and utilizing video clips that portrayed the protests as solely violent. In society today there are young kids that do terrible things and they don't fully understand the extent of the matter. In the book “Monster” it tells the story of a young Steve Harmon, he planned a lookout that turned fatal but he had a change of heart. The people at the scene witnessed and could identify him as the lookout. He did not pull the trigger but he was involved in the crime. Steves name was mentioned when King and Evans were discussing the plans for the fatal crime.
In the realistic short story “ Seventh Grade” by Gary Soto, the main character named Victor, is desperate. Because he tries very hard to get a girlfriend, he finds many ways to be with his crush Teresa, and because he does embarrassing things to try and impress girls. The first reason Victor is desperate is because he tries hard to get a girlfriend. For instance, he promised himself “Teresa is going to be my girl this year”. In addition, Victor took Michael’s advice and used his (ridiculous) “strategy” on how to “get girls” by scowling at them.
The novel Monster, by Walter Deann Myers, talks about the story of two young men put on trial for the murder of Alguinaldo Nesbitt. Twenty two year old James King and sixteen year old Steve Harmon are put on trial for the crime that ended Alguinaldo Nesbitt life. Alguinaldo Nesbitt was shot with his own gun while working at his own drugstore. Lorelle Henry testifies king was at the store the day of Mr. Nesbitt death, Bobo Evans testifies that King shot Mr. Nesbitt with a chrome, and lastly Osvaldo Cruz testifies that him and King planned and did this get over. On the other hand Dorothy Moore gives king an alibi.
Elijah Anderson, a Yale professor, developed the concept or theory entitled the “code of the street” which explains the reasoning for high rates of street violence among African-American juveniles in a Philadelphia community. The “code of the street” is the way of life for many living in poverty-stricken communities which attempt to regulate behaviors. Anderson observed that juveniles in inner-city neighborhoods who are exposed to racial discrimination, economic disadvantages and alienation from mainstream society may lead violent behavior. The strain, social learning, and labeling theories are all directly related to Anderson’s work.
A Child Called It, by Dave Pelzer, is an autobiography of a young boy who is starved, beaten, and tortured by his mother. Despite this terrible beginning he manages to turn his life around. David uses his faith, a positive attitude, and determination to survive his mother's abuse. As an adult he won numerous awards, became a well- known speaker on child abuse, and had his own son whom he loved and cared for. David was beaten everyday as a child.

Historically, Latinos are known as one of the biggest minority groups residing in the United States. There are many attributes that apply to this particular population and one of the most current ones is the numbers of college graduates increasing with the years. The goal of this research project is to study Latinos and higher education. The purpose of this research is to study first-generation Latino college student and the specific financial challenges and the benefits that come with being a member of such ethnic group. My goal is to learn what specific challenges these students have to overcome as a first generation as well as the benefits given to these particular students for being a first generation.
