The article titled "The New Latino Underclass" by Douglas Massey is an insightful reading that shows the readers just how profoundly discrimination affects the Latinos/Latinas in the United States. It was quite insightful as he stated the history of the discrimination along with the two concepts of "Latino Threat Narrative" and "Hispanic Challenge. " Not only was this article by Massey insightful, but saddening too. I was unaware how harsh the immigration process here in the United States could be especially to innocent people who are seeking safety from their own country. I overall agree with Massey in the sense that we cannot just deport bunches of people, but we must understand they are human.
There are many data that show Latinx high school dropout rates have significantly decreased while Latinx college enrollment has increased. In 1996, the dropout rate for Latinx high school students was thirty four percent. Twenty years later that rate decreased by more than half and was at a record ten percent in 2016. That same year, forty-seven percent of Latinx high school graduates enrolled in a post-secondary institution, up fifteen percentage points from 1999 (Gramlich, 2017). Despite Latinx college enrollment being at an all-time high compared to former years, Latinx are still inordinately behind other groups in obtaining a post-secondary degree.
Wealth of an individual, and their health are two contracting factors in America. Usually if an individual has more wealth they are considered to be healthier. However for the Mexican Americans, this contradicting theory seems to disappear. In the film Becoming American, researchers discovered that immigrant Latinos have the best health, even though they are considered one of the poorest, socially marginalized population. Latino’s are also considered to have the best health among one of the wealthiest communities, which enables them to the Latino paradox.
In the autobiography Hunger of Memory: The Education of Richard Rodriguez the author employs the theme of higher education to defend his views on affirmative action. He shares his views and experiences on the issue as a minority alienated in a majority white American society in the 1960’s-70’s. Although he was a well–educated Mexican American, his ethnicity classified him as a minority. In college, despite being anti-affirmative action, Rodriguez still reaped the benefits of affirmative action. He believed that affirmative action should not be not be determined by race, but student’s intellectual ability to complete college.
In addition, Ryan Padgett (2012) found that first generation student seems to be more unprepared to interact with faculty upon entering college than students whose parents went to college (p.261). Hispanics, initial drawbacks frequently come from their parents ' immigrant and economic position and their sparse knowledge regarding the United States education system. While Hispanic students navigate through the school system, insufficient resources in schools and their awkward rapport with teachers continues to weaken their academic achievement. Initial drawbacks continue to mount up, causing the Hispanic population in having the least high school and college degree accomplishment, which is counterproductive of having a possibility for stable employment. Despite the US Supreme Court ruling that made segregation in schools illegal (in Brown v. Board of Education), school districts around the country continued to discriminate against Latino students. As [someone from documentary] mentions, “quote”. Although nearly half a century has passed since East L.A. Walkouts, limitations on Chicano Studies continue to occur. To understand the contributions of the ‘Walkouts’, we will paragraph 1 and challenges that the education of Chicanos currently face. Prior to the implementation from the federal government, such as English as a Second Language (ESL), College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP), and Executive Order 15333, Chicano students in California and Texas demonstrated protested which forced school districts and the United States government to focus on the issues.
This research paper examines the factors first generation Hmong American college students encounter while pursuing completion of higher education. Existing studies shows that many Hmong American college students encounter struggles with families’ language barriers (Lee 4), differences in cultural expectations (Vang 2), and finical issue. In terms of postsecondary education, African immigrants have been given priority over other black Americans for affirmative action in higher rank institutions, leading to the creation of the idea of them as a new model minority. They have been cited as the racial group with the highest percentage of university and advanced degrees at 48.9% in 2010 and 8.2% in 2014 respectively (Ukpokodu 70). There are many problems with the seeming prioritization of accepting more African immigrants into universities. Today, you either get educated or you get stuck in a dead-end job without much prospect for the future. The gap between those with a higher education and those without one is becoming wider with advancements in technology and the growing competitiveness of the job market. There are many dangers of this gap. One such danger is the people who have a higher educations having the leisure to ignore those who are less educated. Joy Castro in her essays “Hungry” and “On Becoming Educated” discusses her life and educational journey.
Selena appeared at a time when the Hispanic community desperately needed someone to remind them of their roots. Many Mexican Americans born in the 1900s were not accepted, and were practically invisible to the community. 1990s Chicanos and Latinos in America were facing a lot of legislation across the country that would leave them excluded and often times without any rights. Having someone in the entertainment business for Latin Americans to identify with caused a sense of pride, and a sense of belonging. Other reasons being their lack of cultural knowledge.

College is one of the most significant times in a person’s life. Every year high school kids will visit many different colleges so that they can be confident in their college decision. Some kids will follow in their parent’s foot steps and base their decision on where their mom or dad went, though, not all kids are fortunate to have help from their parents. Many kids nowadays may be the first in their family to take on higher education. The article, “First Generation College Students: Unprepared and Behind” by Liz Riggs explains that kids who are the first in their family to take on college are at a disadvantage compared to kids with parents who attended college.
