“A world where the limits of reality are your own imagination”. In the science fiction film genre, it isn’t uncommon for a setting to portray reality differently than how it is today. Since the setting is arguably the most important part of a movie in this genre, creating an interesting version of reality that captivates the viewers is extremely important. On July 22nd of this year, a science fiction movie trailer the upcoming Steven Spielberg film “Ready Player One”, was released. The movie was able to create two versions of reality: a dull, boring one that represents what real life will look like in the future, and a vibrant, exciting virtual world where the main character feels he belongs. Steven Spielberg successfully used colors in the trailer to visually separate the real world from the ontologically anthropocentric sensory-immersive simulation, known as the OASIS for short. Right from the opening shot, the audience is shown what reality will look like in the year 2045, shown in figure 1. From the cloudy sky, to the white houses, and gray rooftops, the overall aesthetic of the real world is boring and dull. Even without knowing anything else about “Ready Player One”’s universe, viewers will instantly be able to recognize how lifeless and mundane the setting is. Although some movie fanatics will lose interest in the trailer with this color scheme, the sharp contrast shown when the main character steps into the OASIS will pull them right back in.
