The initial dominating reaction that is elicited when confronted with the overwhelming reality and deceptions of the world reveals much about a person’s character. In David Henry Hwang’s play M. Butterfly, Rene Gallimard is sentenced to prison for treason against France due to his crime of relaying classified information to chinese Spy, Song Liling. He is guilty of this crime due to the reality that Song deceived him by posing as a chinese woman and acting as his lover.
