Conflicts over confederate Civil War monuments in DFW and across the country boil down to an ideological difference between those who wish to commemorate those that lost their lives in the war and those who wish to leave the racially divisive nature of the Civil War in the past. However, these people fail to realize that both sides have their merits, and neither is without flaws. Rebecca Solnit’s article, The Monuments War, frames my thoughts about the conflict over the Civil War by suggesting that perhaps neither extreme of the argument is entirely correct. Solnit proposes that it is not proper to cleanse our country of its shameful history or to live with constant reminders of the segregation of the past, but that a compromise might be found
