The thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth amendments were also passed after the end of the Civil War and abolished slavery, but this was all possible due to the first victory at Vicksburg. This battle and all the events that led up to it imposed monumental change in the United
Following the ending of the Civil War in 1865, America was in an era known as the Reconstruction. The Reconstruction lasted until 1877. Citizens were attempting to rebuild our nation following one of the deadliest war in American History. In this time, the Fourteenth Amendment and Fifteenth Amendment to the Constitution were ratified. Although slaves were freed, African Americans still faced intense racial prejudice and discrimination.
With the creation of the 13th Amendment, slavery was prohibited in the United States. Ratified in 1865, it stated, “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime… shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction” (Document A). African Americans were officially free after this amendment was Ratified in the Constitution and the newly Freedmen were officially viewed differently in society. Instead of being held as slaves and viewed as property, now African Americans were viewed as Americans and could participate in public life. Therefore, Reconstruction was a success because slavery was one of the main reasons for the Civil War occurring; but with Reconstruction, the issue of slavery was resolved.
(Dattel) The Confederacy was militarily outnumbered by the dominant Union States and therefore lost the Civil war. The outcome of the American Civil War demonstrated the strength of the federal government, as their legitimate approach caused the preservation of the American States as a unity. Additionally, they immediately set a foundation for the emancipation of the Black community by implementing the 13th, 14th and 15th amendment in the upcoming years. These amendments were part of the Reconstruction period, the period where the Republicans tried to protect the 'freedmen' and create political uniformity, in specific by impeding the rebellious South to progress in their return in the political system.
After the Civil War, the entire United States, especially the southern states that had supported the Confederacy, were in poor condition. The country needed to rebuild itself and therefore entered a period of Reconstruction. One of the primary aspects of the Reconstruction Era was extending rights to the millions of slaves emancipated by the thirteenth amendment that were in desperate need of help. To accomplish these intentions, Congress proposed the fourteenth and fifteenth constitutional amendments aimed at giving former slaves more rights and a fair chance at being successful. These amendments were then ratified by the states, officially putting them into effect.
Prior to the 1860s, before the end of the Civil War, African Americans in the US were generally treated as inferior citizens by the Whites. After the Civil War, however, slavery was abolished everywhere in the US. New laws were established, which were meant to end the slavery and to guarantee freedom to the freed slaves. The Thirteenth Amendment, which was ultimately enacted in 1865, was meant to end slavery in all states in the US. The Fourteenth Amendment, which was enacted in 1868, was meant to ensure that all citizens of the US,
Ever Since the reconstruction acts were implemented, the union reformers have flooded my area. They have opened colored schools around the area and try to persuade my laborers to learn. As laborers began to sneak away to weekly lessons, I edited my contract to exclude all laborers from my plantation who pursued an education. The laborers have been scared into submission and the reformers have stopped in their efforts to educate them. The Republicans had provided equal protection for both me and my laborers in the law under the 14th amendment.
The Civil War, ignited by the dispute over slavery, led to a new era of rebuilding and instituting new beliefs: The Reconstruction Era. In this new Chapter of American history, the nation attempted to abide for their wrongs against African-Americans marking the beginning of their long journey to becoming a full citizen. Through the following amendments freedmen gained full citizenship and voting rights. Though that was the claim they still were discriminated against by citizens and even a few in the government. Though the reconstruction amendments did abolish slavery, they failed to grant freedmen full citizen rights and the ability to vote.
The Civil War ended slavery and three Constitutional Amendments altered African American rights. The 13th Amendment abolished/discontinued slavery in all territories and states. The 14th Amendment gave equal protection to all males regardless of race and prohibited states from depriving them of this right. The 15th Amendment allowed for African Americans males to vote. With these amendments being ratified, it became a requirement for southern states to be readmitted into the Union.
Contrary to what the Reconstruction Amendments are perceived to have done for African Americans, it is arguable that the 13th Amendment, while set forth with good intentions, ultimately instilled the idea of the Lost Cause of the Confederacy in southerners, that the 14th Amendment ushered in state-led safety for white supremacist groups, and that the 15th Amendment allowed for leeway in the African Americans’ voting rights through Jim Crow laws: therefore, African Americans were not free during reconstruction. First and foremost, the 13th Amendment, which proclaimed the abolishment of slavery and involuntary servitude in 1865, eventually led to the birth of the Lost Cause of the Confederacy (a movement, conducted by confederates, that works to reestablish practices like slavery or white supremacy), because when newly-freed slaves began to leave after the 13th Amendment’s implementation, plantation and/or slave owners began to lose
During the Reconstruction Era, efforts to reunite the United States after the confederacy's defeat in the Civil War occurred. This period can be marked as a stage from which the federal government would begin to target its powers toward formally succeeded southern states to help develop civil rights for African Americans who were slaves. The Civil War was a result of northern and southern states having disputes over slavery, and with the South defeated the federal government would work to reconstruct the social foundations that states were under. As the federal government weighed in on creating political reforms significant political, social, and legal changes would occur.
The now free slaves rejoiced in what they could now do with the freedom to move, own land, worship, and to learn. Their new freedom soon became restricted with Black Codes restricting them and Jim Crow laws segregating them. During this time the 14th amendment came about staring that all people born in the United States are us citizens, as well as the 15th which stated that African American men were allowed to vote. The rebuilding of the South put them more in debt by $130 million. The Enforcement Act of 1870 banned the use of force and bribery.
For some background of the Reconstruction this name was given between the ending periods of the Civil War in 1877, as well as the final federal troops were getting out from the South . Although the actual procedure of the whole reconstruction did not start until the war ended, the idea of fixing the union had been there for a while back. Not going so far away in 1860 the Confederate states were in the process of actually seceding from the Union side, this made the Senate Crittenden react as an attention for a way to reverse back the process that had already started . As another idea came to mind to this followed by the proposal to an amendment for the Constitution guaranteeing the slavery side as to continue in any region it was already executed.(13th
Reconstruction is during which the United States began to rebuild the Southern society after they lost to the civil war. It lasted from 1865 to 1877, and it was initiated by President Lincoln until his assassination in 1865. President Johnson continued Lincoln’s agenda to continue the Reconstruction. Throughout the process of Reconstruction, one of its main purpose was to guarantees for equal rights for all people, especially for the African Americans. Even though slavery was abolished after the civil war, many Southerners were still against the idea of equal rights for all black people, such as the Republicans.
Reconstruction era, which was followed by post-civil war, was meant to unite the states back together, reconstruct properties, and most importantly, abolish slavery in the South. Although the factors such as amendments legally freed former slaves, yet WRITE THESIS After the end of civil war in 1865, Reconstruction era, which was controlled by President Abraham Lincoln, appeared to quickly coalesce the Northern and Southern states. reconstruction amendments, which were approved between 1865 and 1870, played a huge role on giving legal rights to blacks and former slaves. 13th amendment constitutionally abolished slavery in 1865 and followed up by that, 14th and 15th amendment admitted equal citizenship, protection, and rights of suffrage despite the one’s race or skin color.
