All policies have a specific population they are trying to help benefit from. Conjugal Visits is set to benefit not only the prisoner but as well as to the spouse, children and even siblings of the detainee. Many of the individuals who oppose the extended visitation only see one thing coming out from the visitation and that is sexual satisfaction for the prisoner. But have they stopped and thought that these types of visitations don’t only benefit the prisoner but it can benefit the family members more than the detainee. In most cases parents whose spouse is incarcerated will withhold information from the child about the incarcerated parent to prevent traumatization. For Extended family visits some of their short term goals would be to reduce crimes in prison. And maintain the family together while a beloved is incarcerated. As well to have a good behavior while making time. (Raga, 2015) Many people especially men joke around saying “don’t drop the soap in the shower.” and they have a theory that if men go to prison they will get raped. It is said that conjugal visits reduce rape crimes in prison for men. A University in Florida state that these types of crimes are not done because they have a sexual urge but because they want to show who has more power within the prison. Prisons who allow conjugal visits are more prone to see less rape crimes because the individuals won’t want to risk not seen either the spouse or a family member. They also believe that since males will be able to have a wives company they are less likely to force sexual intercourse on another inmate. Conjugal visits started this program to preserve family bonds and that is exactly what they are trying to aim for. One of the many reason why conjugal visits exist is so that convicts will build a stronger bond with their families and make them want to stay out of prison grounds. Many individuals who end up back in prison is because they don’t have a family to turn to or look after. The believes of prisons is that if a family is there to support a spouse or a family member while serving time the prisoner should feel some remorse and try and do good for them. Family is known for trying to guide each other through the right paths. But even when someone ends up incarcerate family will always be together depending on the crime. Convicts that are eligible for parole or are serving a short sentence are allowed to have conjugal visits because it can be an eye opener for them to realize what they can lose if they decide walk the same path that took them to where they are. (Girshick, 1996) Children have a long term advantage about these visitations because even if a parents is incarcerated they are allowed to have overnight stays with them. The way a child develops can be affect by the limited time they are allowed to be with a parent.
